As I stepped out of the station, the admission letter in my hand suddenly burst into flames. It happened so fast I didnât even have time to throw it awayâit just crumbled to ash right there in my grip.
No, not even ash. It was gone, leaving me standing there, wide-eyed and clueless.
âDonât freak out,â Bai Yu said, smirking at my dumbfounded look. âThatâs normal. The letterâs job was to get you through the Dome into Witch School. One-way ticket, done and dusted. Come on, time to officially bring you in.â
She grabbed my hand and tugged me forward, still chuckling.
Once we started walking, I realized this place didnât feel like a school at all. It was more like a massive, planned-out city.
Roads stretched out in every direction, lined with sleek, modern buildings that screamed âfuturistic suburbâ way more than âacademy campus.â
âUh⊠Bai Yu, whereâs the actual school?â I asked, dragging my suitcase alongside her. âAre we going to just walk there or what?â
Deng Xiaonan trailed behind us, still hauling that unconscious kid like he was a sack of potatoes.
Honestly, Witch School was already giving me sketchy vibes. Iâd made it into this place, sure, but I had zero clue where to check in or what to do next.
The orientation here sucked. Without Bai Yu, Iâd probably be wandering around lost forever.
âThe school itself is in the central district,â Bai Yu said casually. âThis whole area is under Witch Schoolâs umbrellaâthink of it like the outer burbs. Who knows, maybe theyâll stick you in a dorm around here.â
âWait⊠live here?â I blinked.
âMaybe, maybe not. Depends on what the school decides. Since youâre broke, theyâll just assign you a random spot. If you had cash, you could pick somewhere betterâmaybe even a private villa. But, uh, you donât.â
Ouch. Straight to the gut. She wasnât wrong, thoughâmy wallet was basically a ghost town.
Looked like Iâd need to hunt down a job ASAP. Hopefully Witch Schoolâs schedule wasnât brutal, or Iâd be out of luck for even part-time gig hours.
I was mentally gearing up for a long trek when Bai Yu whipped outâget thisâa broomstick.
âHoly crap,â I muttered under my breath. Was broom-riding, like, standard witch gear now? Whereâd she even pull it from?
My brain jumped to storage rings, like in those fantasy novels, but she wasnât wearing any rings. Maybe I was stuck in a trope rutâspatial gear didnât have to be jewelry, right? Novels really do mess with your head.
Problem was, Bai Yu had a broom, but what about me? And if she had some magic storage trick, why was I still lugging my suitcase around?
Questions piled up, but now wasnât the time to play twenty questions. Bai Yu hopped on the broom and gave me a lookâyeah, she wanted me to climb on too.
Next thing I knew, she was zooming us through the sky, my first taste of flying.
The view was gorgeousâopen air, sprawling city belowâbut my shaky legs screamed how freaked out I was. This was high-altitude, no-seatbelt, no-nothing flying!
Wind blasted my face, forcing its way into my mouth as the broomâs skinny handle dug into my butt.
The only thing keeping me sane was clinging to Bai Yuâs waist for dear life. Any chance to soak in the moment was long goneâI was too busy not panicking.
Meanwhile, I couldnât help but envy that knocked-out kid. Deng Xiaonan had him tucked under her arm like a football, and he was blissfully oblivious. No fear, no pain, just snoozing away.
Heck, he might even get a wake-up call when we landed.
Just when I thought I couldnât take it anymore, the speed started to drop.My heart pounded as I swallowed hard and dared to ask, âSis⊠are we there yet?â
âYeah, weâre here,â she said, cool as ever.
Relief hit me like a wave, and when my feet finally touched solid ground, they were still shaking like crazy.
I took a second to catch my breath, then glanced up. This had to be the Witch School registration spot.
I probably looked like a messâhair all over the place, nerves shotâbut I wasnât the biggest trainwreck here.
The place was pure chaos. Girls stumbling around, some half-asleep, others freaking out.
I started scanning for Bai Yu, wondering where sheâd gone, when I spotted her in a corner chatting with another senior student.
She grabbed somethingâa cape or shawl, maybe?âand threw it over her shoulders. I caught a glimpse of the word âvolunteerâ stitched on it.
âUh⊠whatâs that about?â I asked as she strolled back over.
âTime to switch it up. Call me âSeniorâ nowâor âSenior Bai,â if youâre feeling formal,â she said with a grin, looking every bit like one of the volunteers helping out.
âRight⊠Senior Bai⊠I guess,â I mumbled, testing it out.
âThere you go!â she chirped. âSo, how was it? First flightâs a little rough, huh?â
âRoughâs an understatement,â I said, still feeling the jitters.
âWell, come on then. Time to get you registered.â She grabbed my hand and pulled me toward the check-in area, where another senior was waiting, all smiles and energy.
âOh, look! A freshman arriving with EYES OPEN!â The registration senior exclaimed, eyeing me like I was a rare specimen. âName, pleaseâIâll get you logged!â
I guess most newbies showed up knocked out, snoring, or kicking and screamingânot exactly cooperative.
She shot a quick, knowing glance at Senior Bai, like she was impressed or something.
âYang Yuehan,â I said.
âYang Yuehan? Cool name. Letâs see⊠yep, found you. This is you, right?â She tilted her screen toward me.
I peeked at itâphoto, basic info, all good. âYeah, thatâs me.â
âAwesome. Looks good. Head over there to grab your room keyâthatâs where youâll be living. If you donât like the spot, you can try negotiating. Oh, and donât forget your phone! Most academy updates come through it, so keep an eye on it.â
âGot it. Thanks, Senior!â I said, probably a little too eager.
âNo problem, itâs my job. Iâve got high hopes for you, little guy!â She said with a wink and that same cheery tone everyone around here seemed to use.
I turned to Bai Yu, confused. âOkay, whatâs with that? Why does everyone keep saying stuff like that?â
She waved it off. âNothing deep. Just seniors hyping up their juniors. Come on, letâs grab your key and phone. Werenât you stoked about that thing?â
âWell⊠not that stoked,â I said, playing it cool, but inside? I was buzzing. That slick phone had been on my mind for ages. Only downside was my old oneâit was down to its last gasps of battery.
Tagging along with Bai Yu, I snagged my room key and phone in no time. The key had my address scratched on it: No. 62, Block 2, Newbie District. No clue where that was, but whatever.
âNot time to head there yet,â Senior Bai said, reading my mind. âStash the key. If you get lost, just use the phoneâs GPS.â
