Kang Xin didn’t understand why HuMin had to do things this way. There were simpler, safer options—yet HuMin chose the most dangerous path.
But hearing her words, HuMin smiled with quiet satisfaction.
She hadn’t expected that the girl she had met all those years ago, by sheer coincidence, would now be by HuMing’s side. And even more rare—she could stay calm under pressure. That, more than anything, was the quality HuMin valued most.
HuMin didn’t hide anything. She blinked once, then asked Kang Xin:
“Do you know who killed the Xia family butler’s son?”
“…What do you mean?” Kang Xin asked, startled. She remembered this—HuMing had told her about it the last time he came to visit. But what did that have to do with what HuMin was about to do?
“If I told you the killer didn’t act of their own will… would you believe me?”
“They didn’t act on their own? You mean… they were being controlled?!” Kang Xin couldn’t believe it. It sounded far too absurd. Was there really something in this world that could control someone’s mind?
As the topic shifted, HuMin’s expression darkened.
Because that was the very thing that had led to her death in her previous life. She hadn’t expected that the enemy had nearly succeeded in decoding the contents of the USB drive. If she hadn’t wiped every bit of data from it in time, the consequences would have been… terrifying.
Francis had wanted to test that formula in the “Lawless Zone.” But in the end, HuMing destroyed it.

From this whole series of events, HuMin had begun to suspect—this person pulling the strings… came from the same place as she did.
Now Francis had pushed “Blizzard” to the brink of dissolution. Next, he would use those people to obscure his true target.
That was always his long game—the goal he’d worked toward since the very beginning.
And just like Kang Xin said—if HuMing chose to work with her, the two of them would probably do what they did back then: hunt Francis down on their own.
But times had changed.
HuMin had seen HuMing’s life in JingDu. She saw how he genuinely enjoyed the peace he now had.
As his teacher, she didn’t want him to go back to the life he once lived.
After all, she was the one who pulled him out of that world in the first place. She knew exactly how painful it was. It had taken her over a decade to slowly help HuMing become more like a “normal” person.
There was no way she could drag him back into that pit again.
As for Kang Xin… HuMin had been watching her for quite a while.
She’d noticed that in this girl’s eyes, there was only HuMing. That moved her more than she expected.
“Kang Xin,” HuMin said seriously. “Let me ask you something, and I want you to answer honestly.”
“…What is it?”
“Do you… really like HuMing?”
HuMin stared at her intently. She recognized that look in the young girl’s eyes—it was a feeling she knew all too well.
Kang Xin froze. She hadn’t expected HuMin to ask such a question. But soon, her expression settled into a calm firmness, and her eyes didn’t waver.
“I do. I like the HuMing now—not the one from the beginning. I know that both of you… aren’t originally from here. But this HuMing—the one now—I really, really like him.”
Though Kang Xin kept her tone composed, HuMin could still sense the undercurrent of emotion.
For someone usually so cold and detached to say such words… clearly, HuMing had changed a lot over the years.
What would he be like… when they met again?
HuMin found herself wondering.
But for now, she reached out a hand to Kang Xin, raising her brow playfully.
“In that case, you’d better learn how not to be a burden to him. I’ve seen the other girls around him. They all have their own strengths, but most of them are delicate. HuMing would never let any of them get hurt. What he needs now… is someone who can protect them.”
Her meaning was crystal clear. And it just so happened to align perfectly with Kang Xin’s own thoughts.
She knew what HuMing was like. She knew he’d never abandon those other girls. And she knew she couldn’t compare to them in many ways. So the only thing she could do… was keep improving. Become someone who could truly be of use to HuMing.
“I understand, I’ll go with you.”
“Don’t worry. You’ll part with HuMing for now, but in time—we’ll return.”
HuMin picked up the phone from the table and handed it to Kang Xin.
Kang Xin quickly dialed that familiar number.
HuMing had just returned home from the orphanage. When he saw the caller ID, he was a little surprised.
Kang Xin rarely called him on her own. Did something happen?
He answered.
“Kang Xin, are you feeling better now? My dad said you might be discharged soon. You need to get some proper rest afterward.”
“…HuMing. What are you doing right now?”
“Me? I just got back from the orphanage. The kids are still as adorable as ever. The old director and the others are getting ready to retire. They all said they miss you—let’s go back together next time.”
“…Okay.”
Her voice was soft—so soft that HuMing immediately sensed something was wrong.
His cheerful tone faltered into one of concern.
“Kang Xin, is something going on over there? If you’re in trouble, wait for me—I’ll come to you right now.”
“No!” she raised her voice suddenly—then quickly brought it back down to normal. “It’s not that, HuMing.”
“Then what’s going on?”
“I… I’m leaving for a while. So this will probably be the last time I call you for now.”
HuMing froze. His mind went blank.
Had he heard that right? Kang Xin was… leaving?
Why? What had happened? Something bad in JingDu? Some kind of trouble?
His head was spinning. He had no idea what was happening on her end.
He’d known Kang Xin long enough to know—she’d never leave for no reason.
“Kang Xin, do you even know what you’re saying? Don’t be ridiculous—I’m coming over now!”
“I’m not joking. I really—”
Suddenly, he heard some commotion from the other end. It sounded like someone had snatched the phone from her. A new voice came on—a woman’s.
“Oh come on! You sound just like one of those romance dramas where the couple breaks up over a misunderstanding. If this were a novel, the readers would never buy it!”
