Ye QiuXue slowly opened her eyes to the familiar ceiling above her.
In truth, she hadn’t fallen asleep until very late last night. Even though HuMing wasn’t in her room, she was fully aware he was somewhere in the house.
And just the thought of kissing HuMing made her bury her face under the covers in embarrassment.
She couldn’t believe she’d been bold enough to do something like that—and what was even more shocking, HuMing hadn’t pulled away.
Which meant... he felt the same way about her.
Ye QiuXue suddenly sat upright in bed, catching a whiff of something fragrant drifting from the kitchen.
She gently pushed the door open—and right on cue, HuMing stepped out of the kitchen.
He wore an apron, carrying a plate of fried eggs and sausages. On the table behind him sat a glass of milk.
When he saw Ye QiuXue awake, a gentle smile bloomed across his face.
"You're up? Go wash up first."
"Ah... right!" Ye QiuXue suddenly became aware of how she must look—completely disheveled and on full display.
Her hair was a mess, her pajamas wrinkled. She looked nothing like her usual composed self. She quickly covered her cheeks with her hands and scurried into the bathroom in her slippers.
HuMing could only shake his head helplessly at the sight, then turned back into the kitchen to continue making breakfast.
After what happened last night, their relationship had clearly shifted—become tinged with something ambiguous.
Yet neither of them had denied what took place.
When Ye QiuXue finally finished tidying herself up, she emerged cautiously from the bathroom. HuMing sat at the table, phone in hand, casually scrolling through the news.
She tucked a few strands of hair behind her ear and quietly took the seat across from him.
"You woke up early to make breakfast?"
"Yeah. I usually get up this early anyway. Had nothing else to do, so I figured, why not make breakfast?" He took a bite of a sandwich stuffed with egg and sausage, eyes still fixed on his phone.
Somehow, it all felt... so natural.
Ye QiuXue found herself thinking—maybe scenes like this would become a regular part of her life.
She was still lost in that warm little fantasy when HuMing’s voice broke through her thoughts.
"About Shi Dan—if he bothers you again, just turn him down. Don’t worry about the consequences. I’ve got your back."
His words instantly set her at ease. She trusted HuMing—she knew he meant what he said.
If Zhao DanNi wanted to push her toward Shi Dan, she’d never let that happen.
Because more than anything, this was her choice.

And for her, that person was HuMing.

"No need for thanks. This is just how it should be. Ye QiuXue, chase your dream. That’s your goal, isn’t it?" A smile tugged at the corners of his lips. They exchanged a glance, both seemingly understanding what the other didn’t say out loud.
What HuMing didn’t expect was that his overnight absence had nearly driven Old Master Gu to a panic.
Even though Gu WeiJun had repeatedly explained that HuMing had simply spent the night elsewhere, the old man had been so worried he barely slept.
In the end, Gu WeiJun and his brother Gu WeiYi had no choice but to stay up all night in the living room with their father.
HuMing had called to explain, but even after Old Master Gu returned to his room, he was back downstairs an hour later, waiting.
Finally, at dawn, Gu WeiJun couldn’t take it anymore and called HuMing, urging him to come back.
A car pulled up outside. All three men turned to the door.
HuMing stepped in and blinked in confusion when he saw them gathered on the couch.
"Grandpa? Why are all three of you sitting here?"
"HuMing, thank goodness you're back. Quick, convince your grandfather to rest. He spent the whole night worrying about you and didn’t sleep a wink."
"What?" HuMing walked straight up to the old man. "Grandpa, I told you I stayed at a friend’s. There was no need to worry."
"What do you know? The Gu family has no shortage of enemies. What if something happened to you? What would I tell that guy?"
Everyone knew who "that guy" referred to.
HuMing pressed his lips together and bowed slightly, meeting his grandfather’s gaze.
"I’m sorry I worried you. But I know how to take care of myself. You don’t need to worry. On the contrary, I’m more concerned about your health. If anything happens to you, I’ll be the one losing sleep every night. So please—rest well. And watch over the future I’m building."
His words reached the ears of Gu ZhaoChuan, who was just coming down the stairs. His eyes darkened briefly, but he quickly masked it with a smile.
"HuMing’s right. Grandpa, your health comes first."
Old Master Gu grasped both grandsons’ hands.
"You both take care of yourselves, alright? I want to see you married with children someday."
Gu ZhaoChuan rubbed the back of his head awkwardly, but smiled brightly. HuMing only nodded silently.
He glanced at Gu ZhaoChuan beside him, who also looked back.
Their gazes locked—but neither could read the other’s thoughts.
Beneath the peaceful surface of this family, a storm was quietly brewing.

Shi Dan felt that after just one night, Ye QiuXue had become a completely different person.
He’d approached her with a smile, about to mention something about her mother, when she shot him a cold look and said flatly:
"Shi Dan, I don’t think this little stunt of yours is going to work. Do you really think Zhao DanNi can shake me? If you want to keep pushing her, go right ahead. Watching her suffer will only make me happier."
Shi Dan was stunned. He stood frozen, completely thrown off. He had no idea how to respond.
He didn’t know the full story between Ye QiuXue and her mother, but it was obvious—there was bad blood.
If he wanted to use her mother to get to her, that strategy might seriously backfire.
"Ye QiuXue, you do know who I am, right? And you know what happens to people who reject me?"
"So what?" Ye QiuXue suddenly smiled.
A smile Shi Dan couldn’t read at all.
"Is the Shi family the only one in the whole of the capital? Even if you say it, can you really back that up?"

"I’m saying—don’t flatter yourself. JingDu doesn’t belong to the Shi family."
