The next day, the group headed to the Spirit Fighting Arena.
Fang Si picked a random seat in the booth. The atmosphere in the room immediately thickened.
More than a few people wore stiff expressions, their gazes flicking toward Fang Si every few seconds.
Her presence made Shen Wushuang look like a mere homeroom teacher by comparison.
Xu Xiaoyu and the others had nothing but reverence in their eyes, while Tang Lie, Du Long, and the rest were visibly sweating, their expressions frozen solid.
As students of this school, they understood Fang Si's personality all too well...
Shen Wushuang rubbed his head. He had no idea how to ease the tension in the booth, either.
Fang Si simply sat there in silence. She and Zhang Dali had come solely to wait for Chen Shu -- and to see how he performed.
As for the rest of them, they'd probably all been beaten into submission by Chen Shu long ago. Otherwise, he never could've become class monitor.
Fang Si could already imagine the bloodbath that election must have been...
"Bandit Bro, you're up!"
An arena staffer pushed open the booth door and called out to Chen Shu. One step inside, and the man immediately sensed something was off.
What the hell? Did a criminal break in here or something?!
Chen Shu's expression, meanwhile, remained perfectly natural. He stood up and strolled right out of the booth.
At the same moment, his personal BGM thundered to life across the entire Spirit Fighting Arena, instantly igniting the crowd.
"..."
Fang Si and Zhang Dali exchanged a glance. Then, in perfect unison, they nodded.
Chen Pi hasn't changed one bit!
"Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome -- from Nanjiang Second High School -- Chen Shu!"
The announcer's voice boomed through the arena as he launched into an emphatic introduction. A considerable portion of the audience had come specifically for him.
"As January's rising star, Chen Shu is a genuine contender for the number one spot on the Spirit Fighting Rankings!"
The announcer continued: "To my knowledge, no student has ever claimed first place at the Daxing City Spirit Fighting Arena. Could Chen Shu be about to make history?!"
"And the most critical detail -- his contract spirit is only F-rank!"
In an instant, the crowd erupted into cheers, eager to witness what might be a historic moment.
High schools from surrounding cities all sent students to train at the Daxing Arena. Naturally, some of them had S-rank contract spirits -- yet not a single one had ever taken first place.
Even though Chen Shu hadn't beaten Xia Yan, that alone wouldn't have been enough to claim the top spot regardless. His combat experience was still too shallow.
"Fang Si, when you came to compete back then, you broke Daxing City's record yourself!" Shen Wushuang said with a smile.
Back in the day, Fang Si had found the Spirit Fighting Arena so boring that she'd simply left.
Fang Si shook her head, utterly indifferent. "Doesn't matter. My little brother breaking the record is the same thing."
At that moment, the announcer spoke again:
"But his opponent is equally renowned! He is the number one Beast Tamer on December's Spirit Fighting Rankings -- Wang Zishan!"
A man who looked to be around thirty strode onto the small combat platform.
He studied Chen Shu with interest, curiosity written all over his face.
"Without a doubt, this will be the most spectacular battle of the month!"
The announcer's voice surged with passion. The combined records and reputations of both fighters had the entire arena buzzing with anticipation.
"Before we begin, the Spirit Fighting Arena would like to thank our exclusive sponsor, Qingmiao Potion Company, for their generous--"
The corner of Chen Shu's mouth twitched. Are you serious? A goddamn ad at the most critical moment? You've got some nerve...
"Cut the crap and start already!"
"Since when does the Arena run ads?! This is disgusting! I'll sue you people!"
"We object! WE OBJECT! I came here for a fight, not a commercial!"
The entire audience erupted in protest. Nobody had any interest whatsoever in hearing an advertisement.
The announcer powered through the entire sponsorship read under a torrent of boos, curses, and death threats from every corner of the arena. The psychological fortitude required was genuinely inhuman.
"ALRIGHT! Now, without further ado, let us turn our eyes to today's battle!"
The ad finally ended. What came next was the fight between Chen Shu and Wang Zishan.
Wang Zishan spoke up: "Before we start, I have a question I'd like to ask!"
Chen Shu raised an eyebrow. "What a coincidence -- I've got a question too!"
"What question?"
"Why did you name yourself 'Beast Taming Lion Prince'?"
"..."
Black lines streaked across Wang Zishan's forehead. You're the goddamn Lion Prince, you little shit.
"I'm a Beast Tamer. Wang Zishan. Three separate words. You really are a sentence-parsing genius, aren't you?"
"Uh... I thought you were half-man, half-lion..."
"..."
Wang Zishan drew a deep breath. His blood pressure was already climbing. He spoke:
"What I want to know is -- is your Slime actually F-rank?"
Genuine bewilderment filled his eyes. An F-rank contract spirit, no matter how you cultivated it, shouldn't be capable of reaching this level.
It defied every established truth of beast taming.
Skills? Sure, you could keep buying those if you had the money. But raw attributes -- strength, speed, body size -- how do you buy those?
Potions all had upper limits. Even if you chugged every single one, the results shouldn't be this absurd.
"Well, actually... it's not a Slime."
Chen Shu said it out loud, making no effort to keep his voice down.
The entire arena fell silent. Every pair of eyes locked onto Chen Shu, desperate for an answer.
If an F-rank contract spirit could truly be cultivated to this level, it would mean potential ratings weren't all that important after all.
"Its name is... Invincible Super Poop Man!"
"..."
"..."
Every single person in the arena had their eyes blown wide, expressions glazed over like village idiots, mouths practically hanging open with drool about to spill out...
They'd probably never been this speechless in their entire lives...
How in the absolute hell did you string those completely unrelated words together into one name?!
Fang Si wore the same speechless look. Chen Shu really hadn't changed at all.
But she knew -- his contract spirit was absolutely, unquestionably F-rank.
Right after his awakening, Chen Shu had shown the Slime's status panel to her and Zhang Dali.
The two of them had laughed for a solid stretch. They'd genuinely never seen a contract spirit that pathetically weak...
"There's definitely a secret behind this!"
A contemplative glint flickered through Fang Si's eyes, but she didn't dwell on it. As long as Chen Shu kept getting stronger, none of the rest truly mattered.
"You're really not treating me like a human being here..."
The corner of Wang Zishan's mouth twitched. At this point, he'd rather just believe the contract spirit was F-rank.
This turd-shaped thing -- what the hell does "poop" have to do with "superhero"?!
"Let's go!"
Chen Shu summoned his Golden Slime. It appeared in all its chubby, adorable glory, same as always.
"Huh? It got that big?"
Zhang Dali's eyebrows shot up. He hadn't expected Chen Shu to have gotten even stronger in the half-year since they'd last met.
Fang Si was equally intrigued. When Chen Shu had first said he'd get into Huaxia Academy, she hadn't taken it too seriously.
But now, looking at things... it might not be impossible after all!
"Let me see what you're made of!"
Wang Zishan summoned his own contract spirit.
ROAR!
A beast wreathed in crackling thunder materialized. It resembled a panther, but twin horns jutted from its skull, and arcs of lightning crawled across its entire body in an endless cascade of electric pops and snaps.
"An A-rank apex contract spirit -- the Thunder Beast?"
The knowledge surged through Chen Shu's mind in an instant.
The Thunder Beast didn't just boast terrifying speed -- its other attributes were equally outstanding, on par with Ouyang Bao's Ice Snow Crazy Lion.
Once Wang Zishan broke through to Black Iron rank, he'd possess an S-rank contract spirit.
There were plenty of Beast Tamers out in the working world with exceptional talent too.
"This one's going to be tough!"
Shen Wushuang's brow furrowed slightly. In terms of sheer difficulty, Wang Zishan and Xia Yan weren't even in the same league.
"I, on the other hand, think Chen Shu wins for sure!" Fang Si said, one eyebrow raised, full of confidence.
"How about a bet, Old Shen?"
The corner of Shen Wushuang's mouth twitched. So you're determined to collect a protection fee from me no matter what happens, is that it...
