Notes

Translator's Note: I love the author's imagination in depicting various 'Specters'. It reminds me of Japanese animations I've seen in earlier years. The author is Chinese, but the supernatural beings he describes differ from those traditionally depicted in Chinese culture. In traditional Chinese culture, gods, ghosts, and Yaoguai (妖怪) are human-shaped or, at times, take the form of ordinary animals. Only in Japanese culture, with its concept of Yokai, do we find such an eclectic mix of strange beings. The Japanese believe that 'all things have a spirit'; hence their teapots, or beams of a house, can become Yokai after cultivation, and their forms change minimally after becoming Yokai. In Chinese culture, only beings with spirituality are eligible to cultivate into demons, like snakes, tigers, monkeys, cranes, etc.

The symbol on the bride was "囍", which means happiness.
