After piecing together the whole sequence of events, Wu Yaoyao’s anger immediately surged. She stood up excitedly and said indignantly, “Then why did you let him go so easily just now? Someone that awful should have been punched a few more times—no, he should have been punched ten times.” As she spoke, she even mimicked my earlier motion and swung her hand.
“Do you think I’m Superman?” I said, exasperated, pulling Wu Yaoyao, who had stood up, back onto the wooden bench and pressing the cold mineral water against her face again. “There were four of them—how could I possibly beat them? They didn’t fight back just now because they were in the wrong. But if we really angered them and forced them to drop all pretense, we wouldn’t even have had time to run.”
What I said was the truth. I had run all the way from the south side of the city to Yugang Park, and then searched around the park for quite a while before finally finding the pavilion where Wu Yaoyao was. I was already extremely exhausted. If those three girls had decided to fight me, I might not have been able to win.
At that time, when I had spoken to Wu Yaoyao with my back to those three girls, it had been partly to comfort her and partly to steady my breathing.
“You were really scary just now, Bai Qiao. Even I was frightened,” Wu Yaoyao said, looking at the tips of her feet and shifting slightly.
“I was pretending with all my might.”
If I hadn’t overwhelmed them in terms of presence, and they had noticed that I had already run out of strength, then I would have needed the ice water on my face as well.
“Even if it was an act, you were still very handsome,” Wu Yaoyao said, looking at me and letting out a silly laugh.
I moved Wu Yaoyao’s twin ponytails back so they wouldn’t get in the way and continued, “I didn’t expose Lin Gu because I was giving him a way out. That way, things wouldn’t escalate into a complete falling-out. He can go back and spin whatever lies he wants to those three girls, and we will have much less trouble in the future. Anyway, that punch had already turned his face into a pig’s head.”
After hearing my explanation, Wu Yaoyao nodded as if she half understood. “Oh…”
The place where her face had been hit had improved a lot. Her fair complexion had returned to its usual cuteness. The gentle breeze caused her twin ponytails to sway lightly.
It was getting late; it was time to go home.
I looked at the evening glow in the distance, stood up, and stuffed the mineral water into Wu Yaoyao’s hand. “Alright, it’s getting late. Your mom must be worried. Hurry home.”
“W-wait!” Wu Yaoyao stood up in a fluster, hesitating to speak. Her face was flushed red, probably because of the sunset.
“What is it?”
I looked at her in confusion. Surely she wasn’t going to ask me to walk her home? I was certain they wouldn’t come looking for trouble again.
“I… I…” Wu Yaoyao seemed to be gathering her courage. Her face grew redder, and her voice softer.
“I really, really, really like you. I’ll say it again… go out with me, Bai Qiao.”
After saying that, Wu Yaoyao lowered her already flushed face. Her fingers tightly gripped the hem of her clothes as she stood less than half a step away from me, waiting for my response.
I hadn’t expected such a sudden confession and froze for a moment.
What was wrong with Wu Yaoyao? There was nothing wrong with her. She was good in every way. She was very cute, and her personality was great. With her twin ponytails and innocent demeanor, she was like the kind of girl you might catch a fleeting glimpse of on the subway while she played on her phone—someone unforgettable long after.
But the better she was, the more afraid I became.
What kind of feeling was love, exactly?
Forget it, Bai Qiao. This kind of feeling—experiencing it alone was enough.
“I’m sorry. I told you before,” I said, turning my head and looking at the coconut trees swaying in the sea breeze. I licked my slightly dry lips and brought out that excuse again. “The person I like is… Senior Ning Yi.”
Wu Yaoyao slowly loosened her grip on her clothes. The flush on her face gradually faded, but she still kept her head lowered, saying nothing.
There was half a meter of distance between us, separated by the sea breeze.
“I’ve decided.” Wu Yaoyao lifted her head slightly, tilting it as she looked up at me, the corners of her mouth forming a beautiful curve. “I’m going to pursue you.”
…………
“Bai Lu, I’m not going to school tomorrow.”
In the supermarket not far from home, the place was crowded with people. I pushed a shopping cart, walking with my younger sister through the chilled food section, and frowned as I said something completely out of the blue.
My younger sister was looking at the shrimp lying on ice, her fair hand resting against her chin as she seemed to be calculating how much to buy for the two of us. Hearing me, she merely nodded. “Mm. Brother, what do you think about braised prawns?”
Sister, at this life-or-death moment for your brother, could you not be discussing prawns—such insignificant arthropods that aren’t even worth stepping on?!
“Sounds good, I haven’t had that in a while—wait, Bai Lu, did you even hear what I just said?!”
That damn arthropod almost led me astray. I looked at Bai Lu in shock. I had just said I wasn’t going to school tomorrow, and she was this calm?! Normally she would have looked at me with concern and asked all sorts of questions! Who was this girl who looked exactly like my adorable sister?
Oh… I knew. She must have been possessed by Wu Yaoyao! She had said she would pursue me, and when I turned and ran, she must have secretly followed me. Then she disguised herself as Bai Lu in front of the theater, waited for me to pick her up, suggested going to the supermarket, and took the opportunity to win me over!
Unbelievable, Wu Yaoyao—you actually resorted to such unscrupulous means just to get me.
“Brother, you’re being noisy.” Bai Lu continued picking out shrimp, her black hair swaying slightly, without turning around. “Tomorrow is Saturday. Were you going to school?”
Oh, right. Tomorrow was Saturday.
Realizing that, my mood lifted a little. At least I had two more days to live. Wu Yaoyao said she would pursue me—once I went back to school, I would be driven crazy by her and her admirers!
“Brother forgot tomorrow is Saturday?”
Bai Lu turned her head, holding a shrimp in her hand, her gentle gaze resting on me.
“Yeah…” I scratched my head, feeling a little embarrassed. As a student, forgetting what day it was—what a disgrace.
“So that means… Brother also forgot that you were supposed to come watch my performance tomorrow?” Bai Lu’s voice remained gentle, but her eyes began to turn empty.
So scary. Little sister was terrifying!
“H-how could I possibly forget my sister’s performance tomorrow? The shrimp! The shrimp is about to be crushed by you!” I denied it while hurriedly reminding her that the shrimp in her hand was about to be flattened.
“Ah, ah!”
Poor Mr. Prawn.
