Ch. 142 - Breaching the High Wall

Wang Ge took the lead, igniting the passion of the Ascenders behind him.

Taking the lead in battle—this was what a commander should be! Tianyang drew his Crimson Moon Warblade and infused it with star energy, a crimson glow lit up along the blade's edge.

Someone let out a wild yell, leaning forward and charging toward the dark creatures.

It was that arrogant kid with blue hair, Kunlan. His weapon was a pair of hook blades, their edges aligned with his forearms, allowing for both defense and offense.

This was a weapon that combined attack and defense!

Kunlan's star energy became visible, and even his hook blades were imbued with a silver glow. He plunged into a group of Wanderers, shouting wildly as he spun like a top.

The two hook blades traced silver rings, with edges sharp enough to slice through limbs and will prison. Anything touched by these rings was split open.

After a few spins, Kunlan had taken down more than a dozen Wanderers.

Suddenly, he rotated his hook blades, extending their reach, and his attacks gained greater range.

"Die! All of you, die! Go to hell!" Amidst his arrogant and slightly crazed howl, Kunlan charged at two Mad Dogs.

He thrust his blades deep into the Dogs' heads. Pulling them out, he quickly stabbed at another Wanderer with a mutated arm.

After several strikes, the Wanderer's will prison shattered, leaving it with no chance to retaliate as it fell dead.

If Kunlan's attacks were wild and reckless, then the masked, nameless warrior could only be described as calm and efficient.

His movements were agile and decisive, and each slash of his slightly curved blade seemed like lightning.

With precision, he cut through the dark creatures' will prison, each strike with just the right amount of force. Not a bit more, not a bit less, just enough to destroy the cage before moving on to the next target.

He moved silently, his steps light yet full of tension.

Occasionally, he would sheath his blade, only to draw it again swiftly.

In this attack mode, the power of his blade technique doubled. The hard skulls of the Mad Dogs were silently cleaved in half upon contact.

The masked man walked calmly through the black tide, killing silently...

Other War God class Ascenders each displayed their own abilities, and among them, Tianyang spotted Xie Miao.

This guy, who had previously left himself in a safe zone underground, had no such luxury now and had to pull out all his tricks.

Xie Miao used a sword, though it was an unusual one. The design was thick, with visible mechanical components. There was even a trigger-like mechanism on the hilt.

The blade edges were lined with serrations, so when Xie Miao slashed, he would often drag the blade to use the serrations to deepen his opponent's wounds.

As a result, each strike left a gruesome wound.

After cutting down a few Wanderers, he squeezed the trigger on the sword hilt, activating its mechanisms. The serrations on the blade started to spin at high speed. When he slashed at a black citizen, flesh and blood flew everywhere, a gory sight.

Compared to Xie Miao, Cang Du’s attacks were much gentler. The Spring Water Sword in the ponytailed youth’s hand moved lightly and swiftly.

The long hilt of the Spring Water Sword allowed Cang Du to switch between single- and double-handed grips as needed.

The young man had certainly honed his skills with this sword. When wielding it single-handedly, his posture was very upright, using his free hand to maintain balance.

The long sword struck like lightning as he advanced and retreated, frequently shattering the dark creatures’ will prison.

When he encountered Mad Dogs, whose will prison were hidden under their hard skulls, he switched to a double-handed grip, lowering his stance.

In this mode, he focused more on slashes than thrusts or lifts, using his strength.

As a newly promoted Level 3 Ascender, the glow of his star energy was stronger than others, making his double-handed strikes even more powerful.

Due to the length of the Spring Water Sword, even in fierce slashes, no blood splattered onto Cang Du.

If elegance were the measure, then although the masked warrior’s stance was poised, he still had blood splattered on him, unlike Cang Du, who remained unstained.

With the battle in full swing, Tianyang naturally wasn’t idle, though he didn’t charge headlong into the horde like the others.

The young man pulled out a stun grenade, observed the battlefield, and threw it into the densest group of dark creatures.

The grenade released a high-voltage electric field upon landing. The flickering arcs of electricity ensnared the dark creatures in that area, the voltage of nearly a million units not only shattering their will prison but roasting their bodies.

In an instant, a large portion of dark creatures fell; if efficiency were measured, Tianyang’s was the highest.

As blades crossed, a few heads flew, and the bodies of fallen dark creatures made Wang Ge notice the electric field’s presence.

He whistled and grinned, saying, "Throwing out three hundred contribution points in one go, damn, it’s good to have money."

While speaking, he didn’t look back and chopped off the heads of two mad Dogs beside him with one stroke.

Tianyang didn’t know if the dark creatures he took down with the grenade he threw would earn him back some contribution points. At this point, he couldn’t think too much and quickly tossed the remaining two electric grenades.

Another two high-voltage electric fields appeared, and the figures of the dark creatures on the battlefield noticeably dwindled. When Tianyang looked again, he found that there was only one high-heat explosive left.

He glanced around the battlefield and decided to save it a little. So far, he had used up all the gravity grenades and electric grenades he had exchanged, and he would keep this high-heat explosive for later use if needed.

After throwing out 900 contribution points, the young man finally raised his battle knife and charged towards a few dark creatures. The crimson blade flickered, and the dark creatures fell one after another.

Moments later, a ball of white light lit up on the other side of the high wall, followed by a series of intense explosions!

As the light dimmed and the thick smoke decreased, those with sharp eyes could already see that a huge gap had been blasted into the thick high wall!

The battlefield erupted in cheers.

Another two white rainbows shot into the sky, and the gap in the high wall widened even further.

Victory was in sight; the morale of the fortress's troops soared, and their speed of advance increased.

Although the dark creatures did not experience a drop in morale, they clearly could not withstand the march of the human army and were beaten back step by step.

By the third hour of fortress time, the human army finally breached the high wall, revealing a circle of bizarre trees in the distance within the wall.

The remaining dark creatures had all gathered there, clearly preparing for a final resistance.

At this point, orders came down from the command center, requiring the army to establish a security line and rest on the spot.

By the time it was seven o’clock in fortress time, Tianyang finished eating a food bar, stretched, and stood up.

Although the command center had set the time for the final assault for the next morning, everyone could not return to the camp to rest and had to rest outside the high wall.

Since they were ascenders, Tianyang and his companions had better treatment. They could spend the night inside a building instead of sleeping outdoors.

Tianyang walked to a window, where a picture frame hung on the wall nearby. The glass on the frame had shattered, and the photo inside was covered in dust and dirt, barely revealing the silhouette of a girl.

She leaned against a car, smiling beautifully on a sunlit street.

“Have you all eaten?” Han Shu’s voice suddenly rang out. Tianyang turned around to see the captain walk in and plop down beside the campfire.

Ji Yu tossed a kettle over: “Captain, can we go back tomorrow? I smell like I fell into a sewer, and if I don’t take a shower soon, I’ll die.”

Han Shu laughed heartily, took a sip of water, and said, “Unless something unexpected happens, we should be able to finish tomorrow. But it’s a bit strange; I heard some people from above say that they haven’t found any trace of the Black Prince.”

Having breached the high wall, the strange trees were now in sight. If the Black Prince was inside, how could he hide from the eyes of those high-ranking powerful individuals?

But if the Black Prince wasn’t here, where could those things have gone? If they had already left, why were the dark creatures still lingering?

“And I also heard some strange things,” Han Shu continued, pulling out a food bar, tearing off the packaging, and taking a bite. He sighed, “This stuff tastes like chewing wax. Can’t the development department add some artificial flavor to it? It’s awful.”

Cang Du, who was polishing his sword, interrupted the captain’s words, “What strange things, Captain?”

Han Shu finished the food bar in a few bites. “I just chatted with a guy from the service team, and he said that they haven’t received any reports of dead bodies recently. Isn’t that strange?”

Tianyang and the others exchanged glances.

“No dead bodies?” Ji Yu stood up. “Where did the bodies go? Could it be that the dark creatures stole them?”

“Are you crazy? What would the dark creatures want with dead bodies, to stock up on food?” Han Shu dismissed it.

But Tianyang thought of those strange plants he had seen underground, where he had spotted the face of a human soldier in one of the root bulbs.

Could it be that the bodies of the dead had been collected by the dark creatures for some purpose?

The young man then recalled that bizarre entity that resembled a pregnant woman, and he frowned slightly, a thought forming in his mind.

Perhaps tomorrow would not be the end after all.

Suddenly, an alarm sounded outside the building. Tianyang looked out the window and saw explosions and beams of starlight appearing near the tree wall.

Following that, Han Shu jumped up with a communication device in hand. “Let’s go! Those damned creatures are attacking our defense line. Sijian wants us to go support!”

***Clang!**

Cang Du sheathed the Springwater Longsword on his back and said excitedly, “Great! I can earn some military merit again.”

Ji Yu sighed, “Looks like this year, my skin is going to get worse…”
