Notes

[1] 尿意 (niào yì) -- "Pee Intent": In Chinese cultivation fiction, 意 (yì, "intent/will") transforms any weapon into a lofty martial concept. Swordsmen cultivate 剑意 (Sword Intent), blade-masters cultivate 刀意 (Blade Intent), and Zhang Dali -- ever the visionary -- argues that chefs should cultivate 锅意 (Wok Intent) by carrying their wok at all times. Fang Si then connects the dots: if that logic holds, then Chen Shu, who never goes anywhere without his urea bag, must be cultivating 尿意. Unfortunately, 尿意 is also a perfectly normal Chinese phrase meaning "the urge to pee." Chen Shu's outraged comeback -- "I'd have that urge WITHOUT the bag!" -- works because 尿意 snaps back to its mundane meaning the instant he says it.
