'Yuehan’s awake?' That was Bai Yu’s first thought. Then it hit her—nope, Yuehan’s phone wasn’t on silent. Every message she’d sent would’ve blared right through.
Bai Yu slapped a hand over her face. 'Oops. My screw-up.'

Meanwhile, back in my room, I got yanked out of sleep by that stupid phone notification.
I was usually a deep sleeper—out cold—but this constant buzzing? It was like a mosquito that wouldn’t buzz off.
Groggy and pissed, I couldn’t fall back asleep.
Once the fog cleared, my first move was to check on Bai Yu.
If I was up, she’d be too, right? I reached over to poke her—except the bed was empty. Like, totally deserted.
My brain froze.
She’s gone?
I even pulled the blankets back, half-thinking she’d jump out like it was a joke. Nope. Just sheets.
Okay, I was still half-asleep and obviously not firing on all cylinders.
But the phone kept pinging, and that flipped a switch—my long-buried morning crankiness kicked in hard.
Who’s blowing up my phone at this hour?
I grabbed it, squinting at the screen… and realized my old phone was dead. Duh. Of course, it wasn’t that one—I barely had anyone in my new phone yet.
So, it was the fancy new Witch School phone. I snatched it up, blinking at the time. Still the middle of the damn night, and the message count kept rising.
It was… Bai Yu. Wait—Bai Yu?
What the heck? Why was she texting me instead of sleeping next to me?
Had she been snatched or something?
Either way, I opened the chat and cranked the notification volume way down. New phone or not, I could figure out the basics.
I scrolled up. First thing: an apology. She couldn’t stay and sleep with me—something urgent came up, she said.
I frowned, thrown off. But honestly? Her ditching wasn’t the end of the world.
I stretched out across the huge bed, loving the space. Sure, it felt a bit lonely, but sprawling solo on a bed this size? Heaven.
After that, the messages turned into a survival manual—Bai Yu’s tips for getting by here.
She’d even tossed in random little stuff, like how to deal with things I’d never even considered. It was a treasure trove of info… and a giant pain in the ass.
Being a girl was this tricky? And that’s not even counting periods—which, thank witchification, I didn’t have to worry about.
I sighed. I’d give it a shot, I guess. The only part I really cared about? Taking care of myself—staying cute.
Who doesn’t want to look good? Beauty’s the real winner, right?
After making sure no more texts were coming, I tapped out a quick reply—short and simple—then flopped back down.
With Bai Yu gone, I let loose. No more curling up all proper and tense. I sprawled out like a starfish, taking up every inch of the bed in the coziest way possible. Why not?
Morning came, sunlight pouring in.
My brain finally kicked back on, wide awake.
I grabbed my phone out of habit—8-something AM.
Panic hit for a second. I’m usually up way earlier—my internal clock’s like a drill sergeant. But then last night’s madness and those midnight texts clicked. Sleeping in tracked.
I scratched my head, hair a total mess, and blinked around the room. Guess I wasn’t used to this yet. No plans today, either.
Maybe I could snag a part-time job somewhere?
After a quick wash-up, I tackled my hair—and man, what a pain. The comb kept getting stuck halfway through, and it drove me nuts. I couldn’t bring myself to yank it hard enough to tear anything out, so I just clenched my jaw and went slow. Took ages, and all I ended up with was a basic ponytail.
And it was kinda crooked. Guess I need more practice…
Heading downstairs, I saw that little smart butler thing zipping across the floor again. The second I came into view, it somehow noticed me and chirped a greeting.
“Good morning, master!”
“Morning,” I mumbled back, barely awake enough to give a crap.
I’d ditched the sleep robe by now, throwing on something simple—not a dress, but kinda like a JK uniform vibe. A light blouse up top, plaid mini-skirt down below.
Stockings? Nah. They felt great to wear, sure, but they’re a dirt and snag magnet. Bare legs were fine—and honestly, they looked pretty good too.
I tossed on my witch cloak to finish it off, but skipped the hat. That thing was way too loud—like a giant “witch alert!” sign—and I’ve never been into hats anyway. Lugging it around would just be annoying.
So, out of the witchy four-piece set, I went with two: the cloak and the badge. The badge had a Fireball spell built in, which was awesome… if I knew how to use it. Still no idea on that one.
Yesterday at Snack Alley with Bai Yu, I saw tons of seniors rocking their cloaks and badges—some even kept the hats on. Made me jealous.
If I had one of those magic storage pouches, I could stash the hat when it got old and pull it out whenever I wanted.
Oh, and my wand—wonder when that’s showing up?
I’d left my address and name with the shop, but I hoped they didn’t drop it off while I was out. Eh, whatever. There was still time before classes started, and the academy was not that slow.
Plus, the house has a mail spot out front—I’d just peek at it now and then.
Today’s plan was easy. I got here early to get a jump on college life, right? Might as well settle in before new roommates roll up and figure out this whole “girl” deal.
Speaking of which, no way was I telling anyone I used to be a guy. No idea how people here would react, and I was not trying to make myself a target. Better to keep it chill.
Oh, and if I could lock down a steady part-time job, that’d be huge. The cash from my old gig’s barely enough for food anymore.
This was the Witch School—if they started hitting me with fees, I’m screwed. I’ve got nothing, not a penny to my name.
Right before heading out, I hit a snag: shoes. Last night’s trip tipped me off—Bai Yu had hooked me up with some girly options.
Problem was, I’m a sneaker diehard. Tough, comfy, no hassle. Little leather shoes or knee-high boots? Cute, sure, but they felt off on my feet.
Still, they did look dope in the outfit. Today, though, I wasn’t feeling anything too flashy—I was hunting for jobs, not walking a catwalk. If these clothes got wrecked, I’d be pissed.
