Early the next morning -- the first day of the new year.
Chen Shu had planned to sneak off, but his father caught him and dragged him along for the rounds of visiting relatives.
Because Chen Shu had gotten into the Special Training Class, his parents were riding a wave of pride.
The relatives all said the usual pleasantries -- how Chen Shu had really made something of himself, how he'd definitely grow into a powerful Beast Tamer someday.
But the younger cousins? They swarmed him like he was their lifelong idol, orbiting Chen Shu nonstop.
Quite a few of them even pulled out their phones and snapped photos with him, treating him like some kind of A-list celebrity.
They probably wanted to bring the photos back to school and show off.
After all, what middle schooler in the city didn't know that Chen Shu had single-handedly demolished all seven of Nanjiang's high schools?
A photo like that was practically a protection talisman. You could walk sideways through school with it.
For several days straight, Chen Shu was stuck doing the family visiting circuit.
"FINALLY over!"
Chen Shu's body ached with exhaustion. He let out a sigh. "I can finally get some proper sleep!"
He hadn't slept in the mornings for days. His entire schedule was ruined.
Not sleeping in the mornings was an absolute waste!
He was just about to collapse into bed when his phone suddenly rang.
"Who the hell is this? Calling me first thing in the morning to disturb my sleep -- do you have a death wish?"
"It's me. Shen Wushuang!"
"Oh, Teacher Shen! Was I just talking in my sleep? I feel somewhat delirious."
"..."
The corner of Shen Wushuang's mouth twitched. Your reflexes are way too goddamn fast.
"I'm calling to remind you -- school starts in three days!"
Chen Shu instinctively blurted out, "School? What school?"
"Are you fucking with me right now?!"
Shen Wushuang was rendered speechless. How in the hell was anyone supposed to answer that question?
"School?!"
Chen Shu shook his head, instantly snapping awake. "That can't be right. Didn't winter break just start yesterday?"
"..."
Shen Wushuang let out a laugh. "Chen Pi, you're getting a little too bold, huh? You dare joke around with me? You are FINISHED. I'm telling you right now, explicitly -- you are FINISHED."
Chen Shu tried to explain. "No, wait, Teacher Shen--"
Beep... beep... beep...
Great. I've pissed off Old Shen. Looks like I need to find an opportunity to... bury him!
Right as he was thinking that, Fang Si suddenly called.
Chen Shu raised an eyebrow. Great minds think alike -- I was just thinking about burying Shen Wushuang, and Fang Si calls right on cue.
"Hey, Sis Fang Si!"
Fang Si's anxious voice came through the line. "Chen Pi, I need to borrow your classmate's Thunderbird!"
Chen Shu asked immediately, "Something happened?!"
He'd been worried he couldn't find anything to do. If he didn't raise some hell soon, school was gonna start...
Fang Si said, "Why do I get the feeling you sound excited?"
"Illusion! Total illusion! I just want to step up and help, that's all!"
Chen Shu explained, "Go ahead, tell me. What's going on? More fierce beasts showed up?"
Fang Si's voice turned dead serious. "There's a Beast Tide forming!"
"Holy shit!"
Chen Shu's expression shifted. A beast horde and a Beast Tide were two completely different things.
The first Beast Tide he'd ever seen was the Steel Fang Rats, and that had shaken him to his core.
He was about to speak when options appeared before his eyes again.
Sure enough -- the moment something happened, options were easy to trigger.
It wasn't that Chen Shu wanted to cause trouble. He just wanted to get stronger. Was that wrong? Absolutely not!
Ding!
[Option 1: Reinforce Fang Si and suppress the Beast Tide together! Completion reward: Deterrent Roar skill +1! If the Beast Tide is successfully repelled, bonus reward: Large amount of Beast Taming Power!]
[Option 2: Turn a blind eye and remain indifferent! Completion reward: Medium amount of Beast Taming Power!]
[Option 3: Seize the opportunity -- deploy Explosion Potions inside Nanjiang City! Cooperate with the fierce beasts from the inside, and rise to fame in one stroke! Completion reward: Advance to Black Iron-rank Beast Tamer!]
The corner of Chen Shu's mouth twitched. The third option was absolutely insane.
The real problem was that the goddamn thing actually made him a little tempted...
He shook his head and forcefully banished the stray thoughts. Then he spoke.
"Did a Dimensional Rift get breached? Otherwise, how could a Beast Tide form? Wait, that doesn't make sense -- all of Nanjiang City's Dimensional Rifts are Common-level. A single Silver-rank Beast Tamer could handle them."
Fang Si said, "It's fierce beasts from the new Dimensional Rift. Relatively stable Space Fragments have appeared east of Nanjiang City."
The pathway connecting Blue Star to Dimensional Rifts was the Space Corridor, and Space Corridors were formed when countless Space Fragments clustered together and eventually stabilized.
Right now, the new Rift was in its nascent stage, so Space Fragments would scatter and spill out onto Blue Star.
The previous beast hordes had arrived through exactly these kinds of fragments.
But the fragments were extremely unstable. They couldn't accommodate large numbers of fierce beasts, and given enough time, they'd collapse on their own.
There were exceptions, though. If several Space Fragments happened to collide, they could form a small but relatively stable channel -- and that was how a Beast Tide could form.
The probability of this was actually quite low. Unfortunately, it had happened anyway.
"Sis Fang Si, I'm on my way!"
Chen Shu said it immediately, practically vibrating with excitement. He could barely keep the grin off his face!
"No! It's too dangerous -- there's a Silver-rank Lord! Three Dragon Guards are already fighting!"
Fang Si refused outright. She was genuinely worried about Chen Shu's safety.
"Sis Fang Si, let me go! Saving Nanjiang City -- it is my sacred, inescapable duty!"
"I'll come pick you up at your place!"
Chen Shu hung up before she could argue, then immediately called Xu Xingxing.
---
The upscale villa district in northern Nanjiang City.
Xu Xingxing stared at the Beast Taming Pearls on the table and let out a wail.
"WHY am I eating these things AGAIN this morning?!"
Just last semester, he'd been looking down on Chen Shu for brute-forcing his level with Beast Orbs. And now, over winter break, it was his turn.
His butler, dressed in a black tailcoat, said, "Young Master, there's no other way. Your current progress is simply too slow!"
"Ugh!"
Xu Xingxing gazed out the window with a melancholic expression and couldn't help but sigh. "Actually... I'm not happy at all..."
Ring ring ring!
"Someone's calling me?"
Xu Xingxing picked up his phone. "Hello? Chen Pi?"
"Xiao Xing, lend me your bird!"
"??"
Xu Xingxing's face went blank. What kind of filthy talk was this, first thing in the morning?
"Hurry up, I don't have a flying contract spirit!"
The lightbulb went off. "Ohhh, you mean the Mutant Thunderbird?"
"What the fuck did you THINK I meant?! Get Little Thunderbird over to my neighborhood, now!"
Xu Xingxing could only nod. He turned to his butler. "My friend needs me for something. I probably can't train today!"
The butler smiled. "Let Little Thunder go, Young Master. You can continue cultivating!"
"..."
---
Five minutes later.
Pfft...
Chen Shu was brushing his teeth when he suddenly looked up and saw something outside the bathroom window.
"Holy shit, where'd that ass come from?"
Outside the window, a bird butt covered in blue feathers -- slightly on the dark side -- was wiggling back and forth nonstop. It looked exceptionally cheeky.
"The Mutant Thunderbird? That fast?"
Chen Shu snapped to attention, finished up his morning routine, and grabbed his backpack.
He vaulted straight off the balcony and landed squarely on the Mutant Thunderbird's back.
Before long, he'd picked up Fang Si too. The two of them rode the Thunderbird and raced toward the Beast Tide.
