HuMing held tightly onto Xia XiaoXi’s hand, while all of Xia XiaoXi’s attention was fixed on him.
It wasn’t until they finally stopped walking that she looked up and took in her surroundings—a deserted hilltop park.
The place seemed to have been abandoned for a while, though strangely, the equipment looked brand new.
Xia XiaoXi stood still, her lips slightly parted.
This place… felt oddly familiar. But no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t remember why.
She hadn’t expected HuMing to bring her somewhere like this. Maybe an amusement park or a movie theater would’ve been a better choice for this moment?
She couldn’t understand what he was thinking, so she turned to look at him.
HuMing was leaning against the railing, his gaze fixed on her. Then, he smiled and said—
“This place… your father told me about it. He said when you first came to JingDu, you were really resistant. You missed home too much, cried your eyes out. In the end, he carried you all the way up to this hilltop park and spent the whole day playing with you until you finally calmed down.”
As his words sank in, the dusty corners of Xia XiaoXi’s memory slowly began to stir.
She remembered that afternoon—the sun was shining, but the warmth was gentle, not harsh.
Her dad had carried her all the way up here.
Back then, she’d been crying over leaving her childhood friends behind. Her dad told her that farewells were one of the most common things in life. And if she really wanted to become an idol, she’d have to get used to those short goodbyes.
“But one day,” he’d said, “you’ll see them again.”
Xia XiaoXi walked toward the swing set, gently brushing her hand along the chains before sitting down on one.
Behind her, HuMing turned his gaze to the sunset, his whole demeanor finally softening.
“Your father bought this place and had it renovated. He hoped that one day, when you were feeling down again, someone could bring you back here.”
That’s what Xia GaoWu had told HuMing.
He’d been keeping up with his daughter’s situation and couldn’t help but feel heartbroken—but he couldn’t show himself yet. At least not before Shi Zhong appeared. Until then, he had to remain “dead”.
It was a cruel burden for the Xia siblings.
Xia Chen had to shoulder the weight of the entire family before even coming of age, while Xia XiaoXi had to give up on her dream to support him.
In a way, they’d experienced more than most people ever would.
Xia XiaoXi gripped the chains of the swing, her feet resting motionless against the ground.
“I remember now. That was the first time I started to like JingDu. Because I had so much fun that day. But looking back on it… I think I just wanted an excuse to act spoiled around my dad.”
She pressed her lips together, a faint smile forming on her face.
“…I’m really sorry about what happened with Uncle Gao.”
HuMing suddenly broke the silence, catching Xia XiaoXi off guard. She stared at him, puzzled, unsure what he meant.
But HuMing had his hands in his pockets and was looking directly at her.
“If Lan Jun had managed to stop that car back then, maybe things would’ve turned out differently. And if I had been the one driving… maybe the result wouldn’t have been the same.”
“HuMing, that wasn’t your fault. No one could’ve predicted Bai YongKang would do something like that. Even now, I still can’t figure out what he had to gain by targeting my father.”
Xia XiaoXi had asked herself that question countless times, but no matter how she spun it, it never made sense.
Most people believed Bai YongKang killed Xia GaoWu in a tragic accident while fleeing.
But for the victim’s family, accepting that conclusion was far from easy.
Xia XiaoXi stood up from the swing and walked over to HuMing. She looked him in the eye and said seriously:
“HuMing, whether it was an accident or not—it has nothing to do with you. So don’t blame yourself. And as for today… yes, I’ve been under a lot of stress lately. I’m guessing my brother sent you because he was worried. But you don’t have to worry too much—I’ll be okay soon. Just… give me a little time.”
HuMing stared at her. For the first time, he could feel a strength in her—a quiet resilience.
And thinking back, maybe this had always been the real Xia XiaoXi.

Not even Ye QiuXue had that kind of strength.
Without thinking, HuMing reached out and pulled her into his arms. In that moment, he genuinely wanted to comfort her.

Ye QiuXue was her best friend, someone she trusted deeply. And she knew—Ye QiuXue liked HuMing too.
HuMing and Ye QiuXue were close. Just how close, she didn’t know.
She didn’t want to give up on HuMing. And the fact that he showed up today—maybe it meant she could finally ask.
So she reached out, wrapped her arms around his waist, and leaned in.
“HuMing… things have come this far, and there’s something I’ve been wanting to ask you.”

“…what exactly is your relationship with Ye QiuXue?”
The question made HuMing loosen his embrace. He looked her in the eyes, not avoiding the topic at all.
“Xia XiaoXi, I know what you’re asking. And I already told Ye QiuXue the same thing—I don’t want to give up on either of you.”

Xia XiaoXi staggered back two steps, staring at him as if she were seeing a complete stranger.
Did she hear that right? Was HuMing possessed or something?
Why would something that absurd come out of his mouth? Did he not realize how insane it sounded?
But HuMing looked completely serious. He wasn’t joking.
“I mean it.”
“Hold on. HuMing. Do you even realize what you're saying right now? Are you telling me… you want both of us to be your girlfriends?”
“That’s right,” HuMing replied without a hint of hesitation, sounding disturbingly righteous.
Xia XiaoXi nearly fainted on the spot. Her mind couldn’t process it.
She held out a hand, stopping him in his tracks, placing the other hand on her forehead like she had a headache.
“…Does Ye QiuXue know about this?”
“She does.”
“And… she agreed?”
“She didn’t say no.”
“…I’ve officially lost it.” Xia XiaoXi’s legs gave out and she collapsed into the sand. “Why would Ye QiuXue agree to something like that?!”
