The afternoon sun blazed outside when I finally woke up.
Rubbing my bleary eyes, I let out another yawn. Honestly, if it weren’t for this weird sense of unease gnawing at me, I probably would’ve gone right back to sleep.
“Ugh… barely past two. So I didn’t even sleep that long…”
I stayed sprawled on my bed, reached for my phone, and checked the time.
What was Bai Yu doing around this hour?
I opened my messages and saw nothing. No new replies, no notifications. Figured.
Gosh, sometimes I really envied people who actually had lives.
Now that my “paid leave” phase had begun, all that supposed busyness had evaporated, leaving me here, doing absolutely nothing.
Maybe I should pick up a side job or something. Sure, I already worked part-time at the bakery, but it’s not like that was my only option.
Still… better see if Bai Yu was free first.
If not, I could always check the academy’s internal task board later—see if there were any paid gigs I could actually handle.Priorities first: money.
I hesitated before messaging her—calling out of the blue felt too intrusive. Last time I’d done that, I’d been way too hyped after succeeding in meditation. Luckily, Bai Yu hadn’t minded.
So, this time, I’ll just type out a message.
Yang Yuehan: Bai Yu, are you free right now?
A few seconds later, the screen lit up with her reply.
Bai Yu: Yeah.
Right after I sent the message and was wondering when Bai Yu would reply, she texted back instantly.
That speed… if any couple saw this, they’d be jealous for sure.Bai Yu: You’re not at the bakery?
Bai Yu: I went there.Bai Yu: It’s closed. Are you at the villa?Yang Yuehan: Yup.
Yang Yuehan: Bai Yu, you’re coming to find me again?Yang Yuehan: I’m on paid leave this afternoon—just half a day. So I’m basically rotting at home.Bai Yu: Paid leave?
Bai Yu: ?Bai Yu: I’m coming over.Yang Yuehan: Huh? Is something wrong?
I stared at the chat window, a little surprised.
Bai Yu sure acts fast—was something urgent going on?But she didn’t reply again.
Maybe she was already on her way. With that flying broom of hers, she could cover half the campus in seconds. So unfair.I quickly got up to fix my clothes and the mess of hair behind me.
I’d just woken up from a nap, and honestly, I looked like a wreck. Before, I wouldn’t have cared—but now it’s different. If I show up looking like this, Bai Yu might think I still can’t handle a “girl’s life.”It’d be bad to make her worry over something so silly. After tidying myself up, I stepped outside to wait. She didn’t have a key anyway.
I didn’t wait long before spotting a figure in the distance.
A silhouette gliding across the sky.She wasn’t coming from the bakery’s direction—probably had other errands first.I waved, and the figure waved back. Definitely Bai Yu.
She descended in a smooth dive, then landed right on the villa’s front lawn with a stylish sweep of her broom.
So cool.I couldn’t help feeling a bit jealous.
She never did that when I was riding with her…Though honestly, I probably couldn’t survive it if she tried.“Bai Yu, you’re fast! Were you busy with something?”
“Not really,” she said after a pause. “Just… personal stuff. The new term’s coming up, so I’ve got things to take care of.”
“Well, if it’s personal, I won’t pry,” I said with a grin. “But still—what’s so urgent that you rushed over here?”
I’d been meaning to ask her about the flight license thing, but before I could, she showed up out of nowhere.
Whatever brought her here had to be more important.“I just wanted to see you again,” she said softly. “I might not be around the academy for a few days. I already told the Senior at the bakery—if anything comes up, you can ask her for help.”
She seemed a little startled by my question, like even she hadn’t expected to say that.
Truth was, she didn’t really have a reason—she’d just heard some news earlier that made her uneasy. And when my message popped up, she came without thinking.“You’re leaving the academy for a while?” I asked, surprised.
The new semester hadn’t even started yet, and she was already this busy. Poor Bai Yu.I could tell there was a flicker of hesitation in Bai Yu’s eyes just now, but I didn’t ask.
Whatever it was, it had to be important.Bai Yu rarely spoke to me with that kind of seriousness.
And since I wasn’t strong enough to actually help, the least I could do was not get in her way.“Yeah,” she said after a pause. “The inter-academy contests have already started behind the scenes, even before the semester begins. So… I need to head out.”
“Inter-academy contests?” I tilted my head. “But classes haven’t even started yet. There’s still, what, a whole month left? Wait—don’t tell me… you’re out recruiting new students?”
She blinked, then laughed softly. “Recruiting freshmen? I guess that’s one way to call it. It’s part of the contest, yeah—but no, that’s not what I’m doing. I already ‘recruited’ the one I wanted.”
It took me a second to realize she meant me, and before I could say anything, she reached out to pat my head, her tone as gentle as ever, then smoothly changed the subject.
“Anyway, Yuehan—you mentioned wanting to get your flight license, right? I already arranged it for you.”
“Huh? Seriously? That fast?” I blinked, surprised. “I was literally just thinking about that!”
She handed me a small card—it looked like a temporary ID.
“Guess we were on the same wavelength,” she said with a grin. “Here, keep it safe. I can’t come with you this time, though.”
I turned the card over in my hands. It wasn’t like my student ID—no sign of transcendence energy or enchantment—but it had my name, photo, and all the exam details printed neatly on the back.
The photo was even the same one from my student ID—the female one, of course.“Wait, Bai Yu,” I said, frowning. “There’s usually a registration fee for the license exam, right? Do I need to go pay it somewhere?”
“It’s already taken care of,” she said lightly, then saw my reaction and added, “If you feel bad about it, just pay me back later. It’s not a big deal to me.”
“I… okay then…”
Arguing would just make me sound ungrateful—and even if I wanted to pay her back now, I didn’t have the money.Unless I asked the shop manager for an advance, which would basically be borrowing from Peter to pay Paul. Not a great plan.“I knew you’d be good about it,” Bai Yu said with a relieved smile. “But heads up—the fee only covers one attempt. If you fail, you’ll have to pay for the next round yourself.”
“I’ll keep that in mind,” I said quickly.
“Oh, and you can check your flight test schedule in the academy system. Everything’s listed there.”
She glanced toward her broom, which she still hadn’t put away—guess she really was in a rush.“You’re leaving already?”
“Yeah,” she nodded. “But as soon as I’m back, I’ll message you. Take care of yourself, okay?”
