On one side stood Tang Xin, smiling sweetly with her sapphire-blue eyes wide open, twirling a strand of silver hair around her finger and pretending to be perfectly innocent. On the other stood Bai Lu, poised like a noble young lady, silent and expressionless, though her eyes were gradually becoming more and more vacant. Looking at the scene before me, my stomach started aching again for no apparent reason. At least this time, I wasn't directly responsible. That realization alone made me quietly wipe a bead of sweat from my forehead.
Wu Xiaoyuan's outstretched hand remained frozen awkwardly in midair after being interrupted. She stood there completely stunned. Then she swung her ponytail and turned her head left and right, calmly observing Bai Lu and Tang Xin as they engaged in a silent battle from what seemed like another dimension entirely. The number of people watching us continued to increase. The small patch of ground where we stood had practically become a stage.
Hey!
Stop staring at my little sister, or I'll gouge your eyes out.
Still, this Wu Xiaoyuan girl seemed mentally strong. She was actually managing to remain calm under the pressure of Bai Lu and Tang Xin's invisible showdown. Maybe she was some kind of social genius. A future diplomat, perhaps. Just as I was nodding to myself in admiration—
"Hiii..."
A strange sound escaped her. I looked over. The girl standing at the center of the storm was beginning to crack. Her hands and legs were trembling slightly. Her watery eyes slowly shifted toward me. They radiated a single desperate message: HELP. Wait. Had you only just now realized how bad the situation was?! Give me back my admiration!
My first instinct was to pretend I hadn't seen anything. But then I remembered all my previous painful experiences. If this continued, the battlefield would inevitably spread until I became collateral damage. So after gathering my courage, I cleared my throat.
"Um... Xiaoyuan?"
I chose my timing carefully.
"You came to take Bai Lu back for photos, right?"
"Do you still have enough time?"
"Y-Yes!"
Her eyes instantly lit up. She nodded vigorously. Tears of gratitude practically sparkled in her eyes. Wasn't that reaction a little exaggerated?
"Huh?"
Bai Lu froze. The coldness on her face disappeared immediately. She hurriedly released Xiaoyuan's hand.
"...Sorry, Xiaoyuan."
"It's okay, it's okay! We still have time if we go now!"
"..."
Just like that, the tension vanished. Looks like my intervention had actually worked. I let out a sigh of relief. Then glanced toward Tang Xin, who was smiling with narrowed eyes. Foxes really were born troublemakers.
"I wish Bai Lu would call me 'Big Sister.'"
While Bai Lu and Xiaoyuan were talking, Tang Xin quietly moved closer and stopped beside me.
"Like that would ever happen."
I glanced at her.
"Besides, Bai Lu has no reason to call you 'Big Sister.' Having me as her older brother is more than enough."
A sister as amazing as Bai Lu was basically the meaning of my life. Why would I want extra siblings? Wouldn't that just dilute the amount of affection she had for me? Absolutely not.
Tang Xin stared at me silently for several seconds. Then she shook her head helplessly. One hand held her sun hat behind her back. The other tucked several strands of windblown hair behind her ear.
"...Idiot."
...
Although my speech had admittedly been a little too sis-con even by my standards, Tang Xin had heard things like that from me countless times. Normally she wouldn't call me an idiot so seriously. Then again...foxes and humans were never meant to understand each other.
"But still..."
The smile instantly returned to Tang Xin's pale face.
"A sis-con and a bro-con. You two siblings really are made for each other—in a completely different sense."
"Should I say thank you?"
"It's about time."
She glanced at her phone.
"I still have something to do later, so I need to leave. Help me tell Bai Lu that her performance today was wonderful."
Then, without warning, she leaned close to my ear. Her warm breath brushed against my skin as she whispered softly:
"I had a wonderful time on our date today, Vice President~"
"A date?!"
I immediately protested.
"You think using a word like that can erase all the crimes you committed teasing me today?!"
Before I could continue, she blinked and gave me a sweet smile. Then she waved lightly. Silver hair swayed behind her as she disappeared into the crowd. Gone in an instant. If she was in such a hurry, why had she stayed here chatting for so long? I shook my head helplessly.
Just as I covered the side of my face that was still warm from her whisper—and caught a faint trace of her perfume—I turned around. Bai Lu was standing there, expressionless. Her head tilted slightly.Watching me. Silently. Beside her, Wu Xiaoyuan wore a stiff expression that practically screamed: You're in serious trouble.
"...I see."
Bai Lu's voice was soft.
"So the reason Brother almost forgot to come watch my performance yesterday..."
"...was because you were going on a date with the Fox today."
W-Wait! Did Bai Lu see that entire scene where Tang Xin leaned close to my ear?! That woman really never missed an opportunity to torment me.
"Um... allow me to explain..."
Under Bai Lu's empty stare, even my voice began trembling. But if I explained everything truthfully…wouldn't the fact that I got drunk come out too? So should I explain? Or not explain? Seeing me stammer without continuing, Bai Lu drifted silently to my side like a ghost. Then she tilted her head slightly upward and stared at me without saying a word. Cold sweat immediately began running down my back. At this point, it honestly felt like she might pull out her kitchen cleaver at any moment.
"Sigh..."
After staring at me for what felt like forever, Bai Lu finally sighed weakly.
"Honestly, Brother..."
Then she pursed her lips and shot me a resentful glance.
"We're going to take group photos now."
"Do you want to come?"
Relief flooded through me instantly. Being alive felt wonderful.
"Can I?"
I looked at her in surprise. After all, it was a gathering of her ballet club. Wouldn't it be awkward if an outsider like me joined?
"If Xiaoyuan says it's fine, then it's fine."
Bai Lu turned toward Wu Xiaoyuan. I followed her gaze.
"Well..."
Xiaoyuan scratched her head shyly.
"I'm technically the club president."
She offered that explanation before nodding.
"Yeah, it's totally fine."
"It would actually be stranger if Bai Lu's brother didn't come."
That conveniently saved me the trouble of finding an excuse to tag along.
"Sounds good."
