After the luncheon, HuMing was finally part of the Gu family.

However, due to what had just happened, the two young masters of the Gu family did not take the initiative to speak to him.

HuMing didn’t think much of it. Aside from putting on a show for outsiders, Gu ZhaoChuan would never greet him anyway. As for Gu YunZhou, he had just watched his sister suffer a setback because of HuMing. If he were to act too friendly now, that would be the real issue.

Instead, it was Mo QingXia who treated him well. She handed him a bag of brand-new clothing, filled with the latest styles.

Though it was their first meeting, HuMing could sense her goodwill.

If Han HuMing had been raised under the care of these people years ago, perhaps all those past events wouldn’t have happened.

The one behind everything likely intended to separate the true young master of the Gu family and push the puppet, Gu ZhaoChuan, into place.

It was hard to say how the Gu family would react once they learned the truth.

“By the way, HuMing, you haven’t seen the house yet, have you? Let’s go back in a bit and check out the room prepared for you. If there’s anything you’re not satisfied with, be sure to let me know.”

HuMing looked up at the woman, momentarily unsure of what to say.

“The room… you prepared it for me?”

“Yes, I actually enjoy designing rooms. If it weren’t for ZhaoChuan’s father back then, I might have become a designer myself.”

“Why drag me into this again? Weren’t you the one who insisted on focusing on taking care of our son? That’s why you didn’t become a designer. I’ve told you before—you can do whatever you like.” Gu WeiJun’s voice grew quieter as he spoke, because he had already caught sight of his wife’s death glare. If he kept talking, he was afraid he wouldn’t have a peaceful night.

Watching the couple bicker, HuMing stood beside them, the corners of his lips curving into a faint smile.

He found this kind of family atmosphere quite pleasant. From what he could tell, this couple truly had his best interests at heart.

Instinctively, he turned to look at Gu ZhaoChuan.

Gu ZhaoChuan, too, had been staring at the three of them for a long time. Seeing them together was a glaring sight.

That position… should have belonged to him.

Once again, he recalled what HuMing had said to him over the phone.

‘You’re just a puppet, a replacement!’

He could never accept that. If things continued like this, one day, his true identity might really be exposed.

Lifting his head, he happened to meet HuMing’s gaze.

To him, HuMing’s smile was as blinding as it was infuriating.

“Brother, are you okay?”

Gu YunZhou’s voice snapped him out of his thoughts. He turned to look at his cousin and then put on a gentle smile.

“I’m fine. I was just thinking that what HuMing said earlier made some sense. As a family, we should trust each other.”

“YunQin was being too childish. In that situation, she shouldn’t have targeted HuMing.” Gu YunZhou shook his head, clearly disapproving of his sister’s behavior.

Gu ZhaoChuan, however, glanced at him with a slightly puzzled expression.

“YunZhou, what do you think of HuMing?”

“He seems pretty good. It’s a good thing to have a new family member, and more importantly, Grandpa likes him, doesn’t he?”

At the mention of their grandfather, Gu ZhaoChuan’s expression darkened.

Judging by their grandfather’s reaction earlier, he genuinely cared about HuMing.

That made things tricky.

But it didn’t matter—he had long anticipated this day would come. And even if he were to make a move against HuMing, it wouldn’t have to be by his own hands. After all, he had been in JingDu for years; it wasn’t as if he lacked connections.

A plan was already forming in his mind.

Meanwhile, on the other side, Gu WeiJun and Gu WeiYi walked side by side, their gazes fixed ahead as they discussed HuMing.

“What do you think of HuMing? I find him rather bold.”

“Brother, didn’t we already talk about him before? He’s been through things that none of the kids in our family have experienced, so at times, he acts in ways we might not expect. But that’s actually a good thing. Our children have always followed the rules, but HuMing’s presence will shake up their perspectives.”

“So you were deliberately silent earlier, letting your daughter say those things?”

Hearing his brother’s words, Gu WeiYi finally allowed a small smile to surface on his usually calm face.

“YunQin has always been spoiled. Because of her status, those around her instinctively show her deference. No matter how many times I lecture her, my words go in one ear and out the other. But HuMing is different. That boy has been through a lot with the Han family. In fact, Han ShuYi going to prison was his doing. With someone like YunQin, he won’t go easy on her.

“I think he’s the type of person who treats others the way they treat him. If people are good to him, he’ll be good to them.”

Gu WeiYi analyzed HuMing’s character, and Gu WeiJun agreed with his assessment.

From the moment HuMing had arrived, he had shown neither hostility nor eagerness to curry favor.

Perhaps he really had come back to the Gu family only for Second old Master, just as he said.

“It looks like we should keep a close eye on this child.”

Gu WeiJun nodded as he watched HuMing’s retreating figure.

Elsewhere, HuMing remained unaware of what the others were discussing.

Kang Xin, walking beside him, lowered her voice.

“Did you mean what you said earlier?”

“What are you referring to?”

“When you said you trusted me.”

Kang Xin couldn’t understand—after she had exposed HuMing’s secret, why would he still trust her?

HuMing looked at her, as if perplexed by her question.

“Why wouldn’t I trust you? If you had planned to betray me, you would have done so long ago. Not to mention, you knew my identity from the very beginning. Trusting someone is hard. But once I decide to trust you, it means I’ve given you my secrets completely.”

His serious gaze filled with trust made Kang Xin’s heart stir.

Though, of course, she didn’t let it show.

“HuMing, I won’t let you down.”

“Kang Xin, like I said before—you may be my person, but I still hope you’ll be yourself. I don’t need a puppet that merely obeys orders.”
