Wow... That poor young werewolf...
Lina couldn't figure out how the Dragon Slayer Guild worked. She'd been a member for a few months but had only ever met the envoy.
The guild's name was a bit of a joke. Its organization was so scattered that Lina couldn't believe it was still persisting. Members did their own thing, forming little groups that took advantage of the guild's resources for their own benefit. Lina saw them getting hold of secrets and selling them, or getting people who weren't in the guild to do their dirty work.
They did all this openly, and nobody stepped in to take charge or call them out.
The envoy who had introduced Lina to the guild disappeared after that one time and never showed up again.
At first, Lina was careful, but she got more daring over time and called back all her slaves. With about forty Nature Controllers on her side, she got her hands on lots of information from the guild and made a pretty good profit from them.
But none of it really helped her. It didn't make her stronger or improve her abilities. There were times when she missed the old days with Adam because at least then she was getting stronger in a way she could feel.
Later, she started to see that the ones in charge here were new like her or had joined just after she did. There weren't any old-timers, and nobody had any clue about what had happened to them.
"Where have they all gone? Or is it possible that the real Dragon Slayer Guild members aren't part of this alliance at all?" She asked this to her relatives in a large room.
Her relatives were just as stumped. They had connections in a bunch of cities close by, but nothing came up. It was like the real Dragon Slayer Guild had disappeared.
"Has anyone seen an envoy?"
Lina started to worry. She was connected to Kambi in a way that she could feel his power growing, and she was scared of being dumped by Adam if she didn't show her worth.
The group shook their heads. Someone suggested, "The envoys are sneaky. Maybe they're pretending to be regular members."
Lina made up her mind, "Forget about those useless secrets and jobs. Let's put everything into finding the envoys, even if it's just one," her eyes passing over everyone there. "Catch him---we're running out of time."
...
Kambi passed on to Adam what Lina had run into, and Adam knew he couldn't change it. That made sense. If the Dragon Slayer Guild really was left over from invaders from another world, the big shots at the top would for sure keep who they were and where they were secret.
Now, what Adam could do was to work on making the City of Freedom a big deal.
Starting a big city in the no-man's-land would probably get the Guild's attention. Adam felt strong enough to deal with whatever came up, sure that if an envoy showed up, he could get important secrets from them.
Thinking this, Adam faced Kambi and said, "I've got something for you to do."
Kambi looked up, all serious, "What do you need, master?"
"Take some werewolves over to the Racial Alliance. Lina's going to help you out. Spread the word about the City of Freedom's stuff and what we're doing."
Kambi was thrilled, took the order, and left. That's when the devil's whisper hit Adam's mind: "Master, the regular werewolves don't know what you're after. Also, the kid wolf just woke up."
"What's in the oath? And why do you hate dragons so much?" Adam asked straight up when he got to where they were holding the werewolf.
The young wolf, locked up in a frozen cell, gave Adam a look full of hate and growled, "Nasty dragon, you turned your back on the oath, and someday, the world will turn its back on you."
Adam just waved his hand, sending a wave of cold that slammed the young wolf into the wall. As the wolf hit hard, he said in a chill voice, "I ask, you talk. Skip the nonsense."
The young wolf tried to get up, showing its not-grown-up teeth and spitting out, "Nasty dragon, even if you end me, you won't get anything out of me."
Adam just watched, not hurting it more. He took the wolf out of the cell and put it with the other werewolves, then, out of nowhere, he chopped off another werewolf's limb.
The young wolf screamed in pain and went for Adam, yelling, "Stop!"
Adam didn't move, letting the wolf bite his foot. With a noise of effort, he cut off that werewolf's front leg too, leaving it on the ground, screaming and writhing.
The young wolf was going crazy with rage, biting Adam, but even with its teeth breaking, it couldn't even scratch Adam's foot.
"Answer my question."
The young wolf was crying and howling, but still fighting back.
"You can't say no to me; you can't even off yourself."
Adam took him to another cell, doing the same thing. He held the young wolf up against the bars,
"I won't kill you, but if you keep this up, they will die because of you."
The young wolf's mouth was packed with blood, and big tears dropped hard, as if he had forgotten how to think, just kept saying, "Stop. Please, stop."
Adam let go of a bit of the power he had locked up in them, shutting down their power flows. The werewolves woke up, showing rage, fear, but nobody begged for mercy. A few even tried to smash their heads against the cell walls to kill themselves when Adam got close.
"Ted, ignore what happens to us!" they shouted, showing how tight their group was.
Adam walked at the same pace, steady and even; he wasn't planning to destroy these 'items' but to break the young wolf's mind.
The howling went up and down, showing their fierce spirit. But for the young werewolf, those howls were like a blade cutting his heart out.
There was a nasty sound of tearing, the fifteenth werewolf got taken apart, and the young wolf's body that was shaking just froze, "Stop, if you just stop, I'll spill what I know."
Then came another ripping sound, the sixteenth werewolf got torn apart, "Stop, I've said yes to what you want!"
Adam talked without any change in his tone, "You're not in a place to make deals with me." And he kept going to the seventeenth werewolf.
The young wolf just lost it, "I'll spill, I'll tell you everything!"
"The oath was like a protection deal made by the ancient groups, saying we had to guard the edges of each world, promising to kick out the intruders of *&#, even if it meant our kind might die out, to keep the origin of the worlds safe. The deal said we had to watch out for each other and help out. But as ages go by, some of those groups are gone or almost gone, hardly any can make strong beings, and the dragons won't let the strong ones into their areas."
The young wolf broke down crying, "The dragons were part of that oath. Why, why are you doing this!"
