“Yesterday I—” Wu Yaoyao had just been about to continue when her expression paused. She noticed something was off and looked at me suspiciously. “Why are you reacting so calmly?”
I had just been about to yawn when her words interrupted me.
Of course, I couldn’t just tell her that Senior Ning Yi had already come to find me. Besides, with Wu Yaoyao’s personality, even if Senior Ning Yi hadn’t approached me, I would have guessed most of it anyway.
“I had already guessed.” I rubbed my face with my hands, chasing away the last bit of drowsiness.
“Hmph.” Wu Yaoyao pouted. “I told Senior Ning Yi that your academic performance wasn’t outstanding, that you were dull and slow, and although you were the vice president of the student union you didn’t have any real power. You’re not handsome either—the kind of face that if thrown into the river today, you might fish back four or five of the same kind tomorrow…”
With puffed cheeks, Wu Yaoyao slowly listed all of my shortcomings in vivid detail. It made me furious. Yet every single sentence was true, leaving me with no way to refute her, which made my teeth itch with anger.
“If I’m that terrible, why do you still like me?” I said irritably. But after saying it, I began to regret it slightly and carefully looked at her pretty face, worried that she might become dejected because of my words.
“I just like how terrible you are—so what?” Unexpectedly, Wu Yaoyao merely glared at me with a hint of grievance in her eyes. Her tone carried a sense of reckless resignation, and there wasn’t much else on her face.
She bit her lip, looked away, and continued, “I also said that you’re in your second year and she’s in her third year—after a year, you’ll inevitably face graduation and a breakup. And you’re so dumb, you definitely won’t get into the university that Senior Ning Yi, the top in the city, will attend…”
As if the words “you’re dumb” were some kind of universal truth, her serious analytical expression looked as though she might start counting on her fingers at any moment.
“Then I wouldn’t be able to get into the university you’re aiming for either, right?” I seized the flaw in her argument and said it opportunistically.
“But I can go to the university you get into.” Wu Yaoyao shot me an annoyed look, as if blaming me for interrupting her. “Then guess what Senior Ning Yi said?”
“What did she say?” I was a little curious. Yesterday, Senior Ning Yi had only briefly mentioned that Wu Yaoyao had gone to see her, without talking about their conversation. I was quite interested in what these two people with completely opposite personalities had said to each other.
“Mm.” Wu Yaoyao frowned and uttered a single syllable.
“Mm?” Not understanding her meaning, I could only respond the same way.
Wu Yaoyao took two breaths and paused for a few seconds.
“She just said ‘mm’! I stood there saying so much, and I looked like an idiot! It made me so mad!” Wu Yaoyao gritted her teeth in anger and even bumped her head—tied in two buns—against my shoulder.
“Hahaha!” I couldn’t hold it in and burst out laughing. The image of the cold Senior Ning Yi facing the passionate Wu Yaoyao was just too vivid.
“Hey, whose side are you on?!” Seeing me laugh, Wu Yaoyao stomped her foot angrily.
“I’m on—uh, I’m on your side.” I had originally wanted to say I was on Senior Ning Yi’s side, but when I saw Wu Yaoyao baring her two cute little fangs, I hurriedly changed my answer.
“However,” Wu Yaoyao’s tone shifted, “Senior Ning Yi’s attitude shows she has no interest in you at all, so you should give up.”
When she said this, she secretly glanced at my expression, probably afraid that I might feel dejected because of it. Though she appeared lively and cute, Wu Yaoyao was actually a very delicate and considerate person.
“But my feelings for her will still remain.” I pretended to look regretful.
“Then I’ll wait until those feelings of yours die out.” Wu Yaoyao’s face flushed red, but she spoke as if it didn’t matter.
Sigh… I knew Wu Yaoyao wouldn’t be that easy to deal with. Why did people even have emotions like love? I let out a sigh and pushed those thoughts out of my mind.
“This afternoon, we have a joint exhibition match with No. 2 High School. Remember to come help.” As if recalling something, Wu Yaoyao turned her head and said to me,
“…Can’t you find someone else?”
“No.”
…………
The archery club’s joint exhibition match was something enthusiasts from local middle schools organized themselves. Its purpose was to showcase the history of archery and the charm of the sport. In other words, this event, held every two or three months and entirely optional, was just a small circle entertaining themselves.
However, archery carried a certain degree of danger. Aside from preparing the venue and materials for the exhibition match, there were also various safety matters—big and small—that required supervision from the student union.
In the end, all these troublesome matters still fell onto me.
I spent the day in a daze. After school, I went to the student union room to collect the necessary forms for recording, then walked along the school path toward the archery club.
The glass windows outside the archery club were already packed with people. There was no need to think—it had to be people coming to see Wu Yaoyao.
“Good afternoon, Vice President.”
“Mm.”
As I reached the main entrance of the archery club, a member greeted me and opened the door.
There were many people inside. Many unfamiliar faces—probably from No. 2 High School. Most of them stood quietly in their archery uniforms, all staring at the girl in front of the target range.
That girl was undoubtedly Wu Yaoyao.
Wu Yaoyao had changed out of her school uniform into an archery uniform. Her already slender figure now carried a sense of grace and lightness. Standing quietly, she seemed to be adjusting her breathing. The expression on her face had shifted from her usual cuteness to one of extreme seriousness, carrying a sharp, almost chilling aura. Yet her hair, tied into two buns for convenience, added a touch of charm. Her lips were slightly parted, her fair skin tinged with pink; her eyes, as clear as a calm lake, held no impurities.
Suddenly, her body moved, and her gaze sharpened. Every motion she made seemed to carry the wind—stepping, forming posture, setting the arrow, raising the bow, drawing it, fixing her gaze on the target, releasing, and maintaining form. The entire sequence flowed seamlessly in one breath.
The archery hall was completely silent, everyone captivated by her movements. If one stood among the crowd, they could probably even hear their breathing.
“Classmate Bai Qiao, you’re here.”
Just as everyone in the hall was still immersed in admiring Wu Yaoyao’s form, a crisp voice rang out.
From afar, Wu Yaoyao had spotted me standing at the entrance. Barefoot, she came running toward me with quick, pattering steps—completely shedding the goddess-like elegance she had just displayed.
