“HuMing, can you come over this weekend?”
That was exactly what Xia Chen had said to him—and of course, HuMing hadn’t refused. He already had a good idea of what Xia Chen wanted to talk about.
Over on the Gu family’s side, they had already reached a consensus. What surprised HuMing the most, though, was Gu WeiJun’s judgment.
He had assumed that Gu WeiJun would lose his objectivity due to emotional involvement. But unexpectedly, it was Gu WeiJun who first voiced what Gu ZhaoChuan might be thinking.
None of them could be sure what Gu ZhaoChuan would do—but if they went by his nature, there was a high probability he’d turn against them.
That was exactly why HuMing needed to leverage his psychology—to push him into walking that tightrope.
After all, if Shi Zhong caught wind of any of this, there would be no way Gu ZhaoChuan could stay alive.
But HuMing was also well aware of the risks he himself was taking. Gu ZhaoChuan would continue to grow throughout this process, and in the end… what he’d become was something HuMing couldn’t even imagine.
Perhaps it was Gu WeiJun’s influence—deep down, HuMing didn’t really want Gu ZhaoChuan to go down a dark path. After all, to them, blood ties or not, Gu ZhaoChuan was still part of the family.
Call it soft-hearted if you want, but that was how HuMing truly felt.
‘It must be the Gu family’s influence,’ he thought quietly.
After school, HuMing packed up and followed Xia Chen home. The final exams were the next day, but to him, that wasn’t a big deal.
The car ride was quiet. The streets passed by slowly as the old family butler sat at the wheel.
“Old butler, I heard you were resting at home for a few days. Everything okay?”
“I’m fine, I’m fine… Sigh. I just didn’t expect something like that to happen while I was away. If I’d been there, maybe it wouldn’t have turned out this way.”
His face was clouded with guilt. HuMing had noticed the weariness in his eyes the moment he saw him—likely the aftermath of Xia GaoWu’s “death” that must’ve taken a toll on him.
Some feelings just couldn’t be faked. No one had expected that incident to be connected to the butler’s son.
But when he eventually found out… how would he handle it?
Xia Chen had been staring out the window the entire ride, lost in thought.
HuMing was a bit surprised by that. He’d expected Xia Chen to say something to comfort the old butler—but instead, he remained silent.
Xia Chen had become much more composed recently. Even at school, the mischievous side of him seemed to have been reined in. Even Gu YunZhou had commented on how much he’d changed.
Still, HuMing had seen the two of them chatting—Xia Chen and Gu YunZhou. Somewhere along the way, they’d become close.
The car soon pulled up in front of the Xia family estate.
As the two got out, Xia Chen suddenly tugged at HuMing’s sleeve. He looked him square in the eyes and said seriously:
“XiaoXi hasn’t slept well for days. I asked you to come today so you could help her a little. Honestly, she really cares about you. I think… you’re better at handling this than I am.”
Looking at Xia Chen, HuMing reached out and gave his shoulder a light pat, grinning.
“Don’t worry. If all else fails, I’ll just karate-chop her neck and knock her out.”
“Get lost!” Xia Chen gave him a playful punch.
They had just opened the front door when they saw Xia XiaoXi sitting on the couch in the living room. Her eyes stared blankly at the ceiling, her whole body listless—as if her spirit had drained out of her. Not even the sound of the door opening stirred her.
But that didn’t matter—because in the next moment, HuMing walked over to her side.
“Tilting your head like that—is it supposed to help your neck feel better?”
His voice snapped Xia XiaoXi back to herself. She blinked, disoriented, then looked up. The blankness in her eyes slowly faded, giving way to recognition.
“Hu… HuMing? What are you doing here? Don’t you have finals tomorrow?”
“Finals are no big deal. You, on the other hand… your brother told me you haven’t been sleeping well. Still thinking about that?”
He didn’t mention what “that” was. It was a name that couldn’t be spoken—not to her.
Xia XiaoXi lowered her head slowly. Her silence was all the answer he needed.
Xia Chen glanced at them once, then turned and left. The old butler followed him.
HuMing gently ran a hand over her head, his voice softening.
“Xia XiaoXi… actually, your dad came to see me before you came back.”
“Huh?” She turned her head, confused.
HuMing recalled what Xia GaoWu had said that day.
“He said you were a simple, pure-hearted girl. He’d always trusted you. That’s why he let you pursue being an idol. He believed you could handle it. That’s also why he kept Xia Chen close, so you could be free to do what you love.”
“You don’t have to carry so much on your shoulders. You’ll always be Xia XiaoXi. Xia Chen has his responsibilities, and you have yours—but at your age, those responsibilities don’t need to weigh so heavily. You’re not alone. There are plenty of people here to help you. So don’t push yourself so hard.”
She shook her head.
“I get what you’re saying, HuMing. It’s just that… everything happened so fast. I didn’t have time to process it. I just need a little time to take it all in.”
“You’re absolutely right. That’s why I’m here today—to help you do just that!”
A smile broke out on HuMing’s face. It was the kind of smile Xia XiaoXi couldn’t quite read.
Then, without warning, he grabbed her hand.
“Isn’t it boring to just sit around the house all day? Come on—just this once, let’s sneak out and have some fun!”
“Wait, my brother—”
“Your brother already handed you over to me. That means I have full authority over the situation!”
Before she could protest, HuMing pulled a cap and sunglasses from his backpack and placed them on her head.
And just like that, he dragged her out of the Xia estate.
By the time Xia Chen came back, he found the house already empty—both HuMing and Xia XiaoXi were gone.
But he wasn’t worried. With HuMing there, XiaoXi would be safe.
For now, though, he had something more pressing to deal with.
He turned slowly—only to find the old butler clutching his chest, face twisted in disbelief.
“Young Master… I’ll investigate this thoroughly. If it really was that bastard who did it—I’ll give you an answer!”
“Old butler, your health isn’t great. I didn’t want to involve you in this. But… he’s your son. So I’m sorry,” Xia Chen said, standing tall.
For a moment, the air around him carried the same weight and presence as Xia GaoWu.
