Lin Gu had not expected my movement to be so sudden. He took my punch head-on, staggered, and almost fell to the ground. A faint trace of blood seeped from the corner of his mouth. On his handsome face, the mark of my punch was clearly visible.
I still clenched my fist tightly, standing less than half a meter away from Lin Gu, my eyes fixed firmly on him.
Lin Gu raised his hand, wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth, glanced at the three girls, then looked at Wu Yaoyao not far away. His gaze flickered.
“Why the hell did you hit him!”
The girl whom I had slapped twice shouted when she saw my sudden punch, as if she were about to rush forward.
“Xiaoxue, don’t.”
Seeing her movement, Lin Gu spoke softly to stop her. His tone sounded unnatural—it was unclear whether it was guilt or the effect of my punch.
“President, this—”
The girl called Xiaoxue stopped when she heard him, her resentful gaze fixed on me, tears already welling up in her eyes.
Wu Yaoyao covered the side of her face that had been struck and stared coldly at Lin Gu. The girl named Xiaoxue glared at me with a face full of resentment. The other two girls simply stood where they were, staring blankly at everything.
The air fell silent.
The wind in Yugang Park drifted slowly. The evening sunlight passed through the coconut trees as if in charity, shining onto the pavilion.
It seemed that everyone was waiting for me to speak.
The fist with which I had struck Lin Gu’s face throbbed slightly, probably because I had used too much force.
“Get lost.”
I looked at Lin Gu, slowly loosening my clenched hand, and spoke those two words softly.
Looking at his swollen, purplish-red face, that punch should have been enough.
“Thank you.” Lin Gu, who had stood still the entire time, let out a soft breath when he heard my words and nodded at me. Then, with a faintly bitter smile, he turned around and said to the three girls, “Let’s go.”
“This has nothing to do with you, President. We did this on our own. Why?” The girl named Xiaoxue stared at Lin Gu, her voice trembling.
Lin Gu met her gaze, his eyes evasive, lacking even a trace of his usual confidence. After a moment, he finally uttered two words.
“Let’s go.”
…………
“Idiot, don’t move around.”
On a bench in front of a small convenience shop not far from Yugang Park, I held a bottle of nearly frozen mineral water and gently pressed it against Wu Yaoyao’s face. But because this idiot kept glancing at me from time to time and grinning foolishly, my movements were interrupted several times.
“Mm, hehe.”
Wu Yaoyao sat obediently beside me, her body staying still as told, but her silly giggling did not stop.
“What are you laughing at?”
I could no longer stand the intermittent giggling. I stopped what I was doing and looked at her helplessly.
The last rays of the sunset still lingered. Nearby residents who had come to Yugang Park with fans to enjoy the cool evening breeze gradually increased. The sea breeze drifted gently, blending the scent of the ocean into the deep summer air.
“I’m not telling you, hehe.”
Wu Yaoyao turned her head to look at me, revealing two overly cute tiger teeth. Her radiant smile was dazzling.
“Fine, don’t tell me then. But if you keep moving around, the handprint on your face won’t fade. Let’s see how you explain it to your mom later.”
I curled my lips, ignored her adorable smile, and pressed the mineral water firmly against her face.
“Do I look ugly right now?”
“Yeah, ugly as hell.” I nodded.
Hearing my words, Wu Yaoyao panicked a little. She placed both hands on her thighs and sat upright like a scout, her serious expression making me laugh.
“Bai Qiao.”
“What?”
“How did you know I was being bullied there?” Wu Yaoyao remained sitting upright, letting me tend to her face, and asked curiously.
“Let me think…” Because my hand had grown cold from the bottle, I switched hands and pretended to think. “I just happened to pass by?”
Hearing that, Wu Yaoyao pouted and punched my thigh lightly. “Be serious. You don’t even live around here.”
“I figured it out,” I said, realizing I couldn’t brush it off.
“How did you figure it out?” Wu Yaoyao looked puzzled, her expression clearly saying, “You could even figure that out?”
I stopped applying the cold bottle, unscrewed it, took a sip, and looked at her curious face as I began to explain slowly.
“This Lin Gu was a handsome guy and a big shot, right?”
“He’s a big shot, sure, but handsome? Forget it.” Wu Yaoyao curled her lips disdainfully.
This woman always undermined me.
“Fine, a big shot. As a well-known figure at No. 2 City High School and the president of the archery club, why would he touch a girl’s hand during a performance match with so many people watching?”
“Because he was a pervert.” Wu Yaoyao nodded rapidly, as if completely certain.
“No. Even the most lustful person wouldn’t molest the president of another school’s archery club in front of so many people,” I said, rejecting her answer. “There’s only one possibility—this person was extremely conceited.”
“Conceited?”
“Yeah.” I nodded. “Blindly confident in himself, thinking his charm worked on every girl. But you slapped him.”
“Huh? That’s disgusting.” Wu Yaoyao looked as if she had seen a bug.
“How could someone like that let it go after being slapped in public? At that time, you said he chatted with me on purpose to annoy you. But actually, he used that chance to get the direction of your home from me. After learning you lived in the north of the city, he found an opportunity to quietly pass that information to those three girls.”
“I happened to overhear them talking. At that time, Lin Gu told them not to cause trouble for you. I thought he had found his conscience, but later I realized he hadn’t. It was just a disguised provocation. When someone spoke to you in a wronged tone like that, your resentment would only grow stronger. Those three girls didn’t even realize they were being used by Lin Gu.”
“How could Lin Gu be so scheming!” After hearing my explanation, Wu Yaoyao finally understood. “So when I was being bullied, Lin Gu, who had secretly planned all of this, would definitely be there. Either he wanted to watch me get beaten to vent his emotions, or he was preparing to step in and play the hero saving the damsel and restore his image.”
“He wanted both.” I shook my head. “He had planned to come out after watching you get beaten. But he hadn’t expected that I would show up.”
