Ch. 1 - Rebirth?

His head was foggy, his throat dry, and the feeling of a hangover made Lu Feng want to vomit; however, there was nothing left in his empty stomach to throw up.

He opened his eyes, that action alone exhausted his entire body. He was in a small and crowded room, lying on a wooden plank bed. His surroundings were old, and emitted a musty smell.

"Where is this?"

There was a red bucket not far away, and Lu Feng managed to get up and stand in front of it. He scooped up half a ladle of cold water and swallowed it down in one gulp.

Finally feeling better, Lu Feng raised his head and looked at himself in the mirror in front of him, dumbfounded.

In the mirror was a man with messy hair, in his twenties, wearing a laborers camouflage uniform on the upper half of his body and a pair of worn out suit trousers on the lower half. His face was dry and thin, like he had been malnourished for years.

Lu Feng's hand trembled a little as he touched his face, it felt so real!

"Who is this? This isn't me!"

A tingling sensation rushed into his brain, causing his fragile body to collapse. Half-kneeling in front of the bucket and panting heavily, some confusing memories presented themselves to him.

Lu Feng, twenty-four years old, primary school education, married for four years, wife named Jiang Xiaoyan, has a child, jobless, grew up idle and fighting around, good at gambling and often beats his wife ......

"No!"

These memories confused Lu Feng's brain. The sound of the door opening outside interrupted Lu Feng's memories and he looked towards the door.

The door to the room opened, and a smiling little girl in a pink dress ran in. When she saw Lu Feng half-kneeling in front of the bucket, the smile on her face instantly turned to fear, as if she had seen the devil.

"Mummy, he's awake!"

The little one clanged to a slender thigh, and when Lu Feng looked upwards, it was a tall pretty girl with delicate features and a pair of big bright eyes.

She had the kind of body that female netizens on the internet years later would crave. Yet, the fear in her eyes and the bruises on her face spoiled it all.

Looking at each other, Lu Feng was a little embarrassed and slowly raised his hand in greeting, "Hello guys!"

Jiang Xiaoyan had never heard her husband speak so gently before. She froze there for a while before bowing her head and saying, "You're hungry, aren't you? I'll make dinner."

"Thanks!" Lu Feng spoke.

Jiang Xiaoyan thought she was having trouble with her ears, and looked at him with wide eyes.She asked incredulously, "What did you say?"

"I said thank you."

Jiang Xiaoyan smiled a bit miserably and said, "You're welcome. Next time when you hit me, just be a bit gentle,"

Lu Feng wanted to tell her that he was not the one who had beaten her yesterday.Lu Feng thought that no one would believe him; even he was still half-convinced that he was dreaming.

Although Jiang Xiaoyan was only twenty-three years old, she was very handy in the kitchen. She looked at the kitchen and sighed.

She had saved a few hundred dollars, but Lu Feng took it away and put it on the gambling table.

Lu Feng drank half a ladle of cold water again; his body regained some strength.He sat back on the bed to look at this little girl in pink, if he remembered correctly, her name was Duo Duo.

"Duo Duo, come here!"

The little one took a step back with a fearful face, clutching a worn out doll in her arms.

Lu Feng sighed a little helplessly. In her eyes, he was probably more frightening than the devil.He could only say that the original Lu Feng's death was something to be thankful for.

"Duo Duo, help mum with the dishes." Jiang Xiaoyan's voice came from the kitchen, very light and cheerful.

Duo Duo darted to the kitchen and skillfully took out three pairs of chopsticks and a plate of pickled vegetables, as Jiang Xiaoyan brought out three large bowls and placed them on the shabby table.

Hanging noodles boiled in plain water, a strip of green vegetables in each bowl, and only Lu Feng's bowl with two lotus eggs looked significant.

It was the family's custom to put whatever delicious food there was, in Lu Feng's bowl; otherwise, he would snap the bowl over Jiang Xiaoyan's head.

"Let's eat!" Jiang Xiaoyan sat down across the table, not even looking at Lu Feng, smiled towards Duo Duo and said, "You're growing, eat up!"

This meal would definitely be the worst meal Lu Feng had ever eaten in his entire life.

Jiang Xiaoyan noticed that Lu Feng wasn't moving his chopsticks and spoke, "There's no soy sauce at home. Don't get mad, make do with what you have. If you want to eat well, you can go to your friends."

"That's fine," Lu Feng picked up his chopsticks and with them, lifted up the lotus egg in his bowl and placed it in Duo Duo's bowl.

Duo Duo stared wide-eyed at the egg in her bowl and then at Jiang Xiaoyan, who didn't dare move her chopsticks.

Lu Feng placed the other egg in Jiang Xiaoyan's bowl.

All she could think of was that Lu Feng was asking for money again.

"We don't have any money at home and I can't get an advance on my salary, so if this continues Duo Duo and I will starve to death." Jiang Xiaoyan pleaded.

She was afraid of annoying Lu Feng, afraid of another beating; as she spoke, tears were falling into her bowl.

"Mummy don't cry, mummy don't cry!" Duo Duo rushed to wipe Jiang Xiaoyan's tears.

"I... I didn't say I wanted money." Lu Feng, a person who was most afraid of women crying had his hands full for a while. Not knowing what to do, he hurriedly said, "I'm not working now either, you work every day and Duo Duo is growing, the eggs are for both of you to eat."

Jiang Xiaoyan felt that her world had been turned upside down, as she looked up at Lu Feng with disbelief. She thought
