The scenery inside the academy had changed.
This was probably because the academy gates had been opened for the cultural festival. Many visitors were strolling around the academy, eager to see the inside of the academy, which was usually only accessible to those involved.
Usually, it was noisy when there were many students, but this was a different level of noise altogether. Men and women of various ages and in various costumes were walking around, looking at the academy's courtyard and buildings, saying something or the other.
Since the grounds were quite extensive, I had expected that even with a considerable number of visitors, it wouldn't feel that crowded. However, the situation was even livelier than the town had been yesterday.
When I poked my head out, wondering why such energetic voices were echoing from the garden, I saw that there were even stalls set up everywhere. It was closer to a fair than an academy event. And it was even more so as the people of all ages and genders were coming and going.
"Wow...! It's my first time entering a magic academy!"
A child's voice rang out, and I turned my gaze toward it. There was a boy, around five years old, with his hair tied up. The boy's eyes were sparkling as he looked around the academy. I wanted to tell him that the academy was usually much quieter, but he seemed to be excited by the festival-like scene, so I decided not to say anything.
"Will I be able to get into the magic academy too?"
The boy asked happily, and a plump man with a beard smiled in a troubled way.
"If you have the talent for magic, you might be able to."
"Talent?"
The boy tilted his head and asked back, but the man didn't answer and just smiled wryly. I was about to consider teaching him some basics so that he could use magic, but then a shrill laugh echoed.
"How foolish. If you had talent, you'd already be able to do at least the basics of simple magic, right? I was able to use two beginner spells when I was five. What can you do?"
The one who appeared was a girl with wavy blonde hair. She was probably about six or seven years old. She looked a little older than the boy. She had probably just said what she was thinking, as children do, but even so, they were harsh words for a boy who was dreaming of the future.
I was about to open my mouth to say something that wouldn't shatter the boy's dreams.
However, before I could say anything, the boy raised his voice with a sulky face.
"I-I don't know! Maybe I can, too..."
Although he initially spoke with force, the boy became a little frightened as he tried to argue back. Just then, a man wearing a white cloak appeared. He had blonde hair that was slicked back. The man looked at the boy's face and clothes, and laughed with a puff of air.
"You're probably just a commoner's child. Maybe a merchant's child or something... Pitty. Stop bullying the weak. Bloodline is also important to become a magician. It's too cruel to force reality on him like that."
When the man said that, the girl laughed with a puff of air, much like the man.
"Yes, Father. But it was good that he learned the reality early, right?"
"Well, that's also true. Hah hah hah!"
The man laughed loudly at the girl's words. The boy seemed to instinctively understand that the other party had higher status, and he turned to the plump man with a tearful face. However, in aristocratic society, it was probably impossible to go against someone who was clearly an aristocrat.
The plump man bowed his head and silently patted the boy's head.
"Please wait a moment."
I unintentionally spoke out. Not only the four people in front of me, but also the other people who were watching the situation around us looked at me.
"...And who are you? Do you have an opinion?"
The blonde man asked with a gentlemanly smile. The plump man was frantically trying to tell me with his eyes to stop, but more than that, the boy's sad expression, as if clinging to something, pushed me on.
I looked at the blonde man and the girl called Pitty, and opened my mouth.
"If it's just about becoming a magician, talent isn't necessary. There's no one who can't become a magician."
When I answered that, the boy's eyes widened. Just seeing the boy's expression regain its sparkle made me very happy.
However, on the contrary, the blonde man and Pitty's gazes became harsh. The man sighed and shook his head dramatically.
"Did you lie because you felt sorry for that child? That choice may seem like a rescue and make you feel good at first glance, but in reality, it's very cruel. The boy may try desperately to become a magician without knowing that he's being deceived. When he wastes unnecessary time and effort, and finally realizes that he can never become a magician, what will he think? Do you not have that much imagination? I couldn't do such a cruel thing."
When the man said that, Pitty snorted and shrugged.
"Father is right! All nobles have magician's blood, so they have the talent to be a magician. People who aren't nobles, and who didn't awaken their magic power as children, don't have the talent to be a magician. Don't you even know that common sense?"
When I was told such a thing in a mocking way, I tilted my head and replied.
"That's not common sense. It's just ignorance."
