Charlotte could only stand there, dumbfounded, unable to make sense of what was happening.
However, Gosetsu's words were tinged with formidable force, and she immediately realized that he was not joking. Gosetsu continued speaking without any hesitation.
『At that zoo, I was merely living out my twilight years in peace.』
In the past, he fought many strong opponents in deadly battles and spent his days devoted to training.
But with age, he ceded much of his territory to his disciples and decided to retire. He negotiated with the Yunoha Magical Zoo to live as the head of the petting zoo area, where he watched over the other magical beasts. For over fifty years, he had enjoyed a peaceful life.
『After I met you there, I happened upon a newspaper.』
“Y-you mean… don’t tell me…”
『Indeed. It was filled with baseless slander against you. I can read human script, you see.』
Gosetsu spoke evenly, then slowly raised his face.
He looked straight into Charlotte’s eyes and declared
『You are not that kind of person. I understood at once that you had been betrayed.』
“…Yes.”
They were words almost identical to what Allen had once told her.
Charlotte pressed a hand to her chest, remembering that day.
She had lost everything. Fled, alone. And at the end of that flight, those words had been offered to her, how deeply they had touched her heart.
But that warm memory would soon be swept away.
『That is why I chose to cast aside my peaceful days… and to wield once more the power I had sealed away.』
“Power…?!”
The moment Charlotte raised her head.
A blinding light flashed across her field of vision, and a roar erupted behind her.

“Kyah!? Wh-what was that!?”
She spun around in panic.
The rock wall, once thick with vines, now bore an enormous X-shaped scar.
Amid the swirling dust, Charlotte was left speechless. Gousetsu continued, calm as ever.

Clenched in Gousetsu's mouth was nothing more than a wooden twig.
But it shimmered faintly with light, radiating a tense, crackling pressure.
Charlotte gulped.
What came to mind was a magic lesson Allen had given her.
According to him, magic generally fell into two categories.
One, magic that used mana to perform miracles.
The other, magic that infused mana into the body or objects.
The latter is difficult to control the strength of, and it is said that if an average caster gets their hands on it, it can go out of control. But on the other hand, it is possible to generate tremendous power from a small amount of magical power... apparently.
『A true master could slay a dragon with nothing but a knife.』
Allen had definitely said that.
And without a doubt, he had meant someone like Gosetsu.
All of a sudden, the surroundings were completely silent, and the monsters gathered there stared intently at them.
Their eyes were clear and straight.
That's why Charlotte couldn't stop the unpleasant sweat from running down her spine.
Gosetsu looked around, still holding the branch in his mouth.
『This place is a dungeon known as Toa Cavern. Once, it was one of the territories I passed on to a disciple.』
His tone held neither pride nor humility.
He simply stated it as fact, then went on
『There are many such old dens scattered across the world. Should I call out to them, hundreds, no, thousands of magical beasts of this scale would rally to me in an instant.』
“You’re going to gather monsters…why!?”
『Of course, there is only one reason.』
Gosetsu stated very matter-of-factly.
『In your place, I will turn that country... the Kingdom of Niels into a wasteland.』
“W-what…!?”
『To those who betrayed you, we’ll deliver death. To those who abandoned you, despair. To those who turned away, humiliation far worse than what you endured. We shall burn all of it to cinders. And open a river of blood and corpses in your name.』
