The Sniper, Creating a Character
I am Kentaro Tajima. I am 34 years old, a male, and a company slave.
This is my first time playing a VR game.
I’ve played a lot of games, but this is my first experience with a full-dive VR.
All you have to do is put on this helmet (apparently called a Headgear) on your head, turn on the power, and then land yourself in the game world.
It’s an amazing era we live in.
Originally, a junior colleague at my workplace recommended it to me when I was tired of work. I became addicted to it because it was a good stress reliever.
It’s more stressful than I thought it would be to endure the sarcasm of a shitty boss every day while I work. Naturally, I’m a lazy bastard, so doing my job every day is mentally tiring. Even on my days off, I never get up before noon.
Now, I lie down on my bed, putting on my helmet, and securely fasten the band under my chin to prevent it from falling off. It would certainly be a problem if it slipped down suddenly during the game. I press the button on the side of the helmet, and…
The words [Welcome to Earth World Online!] spread out beautifully in front of me.
I’m struck by the sensation that my field of vision is falling somewhere. And… in the next moment, I suddenly open my eyes and find that I’ve landed in a sparkling, magical space.
The words, [Please create a character], dance above my head.
I see, so, I’m supposed to create a character that I can move. If I look closely, I will see a character that looks just like the real me standing in front of me.
How does it work? Is there some kind of scanning going on? Whatever, I don’t care about the details of the game.
Well, it seems that you can freely change your hairstyle, hair color, eye color, skin color, etc.
However, you can’t change the face or physique, and your gender remains the same as in real life. Well, there are the pros and cons. I hate doing bothersome things, so I’m grateful. I touch the OK button, which floats in the air, without changing anything.
The next question is, [Please select your job].
Oh, this is…
‘Swordsman’, ‘Priest’, ‘Magician’, or ‘Sniper’.
Hmm… Let’s think about it.
What is the best job for a lazy person like me? What would be the best match for me who is too lazy to move?
I don’t choose the swordsman’s job because I don’t have good reflexes, and I don’t like to move too much. The priest’s job is also a no-go.
It’s too stressful to go around healing and looking out for others.
I don’t choose the magician’s job for similar reasons.
The sniper job is… I think it suits me? They don’t move much. They also strike a blow from a distance.
Yeah, not bad.
It’s the best match for me who doesn’t like bothersome things. I’ll go with a sniper.
[Please select a weapon].
Bow or sniper rifle? I’d have to choose a rifle for that sort of thing. The rifle is definitely superior in both range and power.
[Lastly, what is your name?]
Name. Will it be my name in this Earth World Online game?
What a pain in the ass.
Is this OK?
[Welcome to the Town of Beginnings, Kentaro!]
