“I bothered you to come and yet we got nothing.”
“No, it wasn’t your fault Hiroto-kun. Besides, if it wasn’t here, that means it has somewhere to go, right? Isn’t that better for a ghost?”
Even though roaming around without being able to attain peace might not seem like a good thing, if a ghost could decide where to go according to their own will, it could be a good thing from their standpoint.
“Well then, if you think there’s nothing to be concerned about, let me take you back to your office. Sorry for making you come here in this cold weather.”
“No, no, it’s completely fine! There’s just one thing… Can I take a look at the Jizo bodhisattva? The one you said was broken.”
“Yes, of course. We can stop by on the way to the parking lot. But is there a point in examining it? It’s just a broken statue.”
“Well, I suppose. But still…”
“Did you get any instructions about it or something?”
“Yes. I was told that I should have a look at the things that happened before and after the crime. And then there’s the fact that Mutsu-san seemed especially curious about that Jizo statue too…”
“She’s zealous about work, isn’t she?”
As Nishihara nodded to show his agreement, he started to go down the stairs together with Hiroto. The stone stairway wasn’t particularly long, but after climbing to the top, one could still get a slightly better view of the streets. Hiroto suddenly came to a stop and observed the surroundings.
Around the main street, there were narrow roads with private houses crowded together. Some shops had signboards and goods piled up at the storefronts. Hiroto was moving his gaze, observing all of this. It didn’t seem like there was something specific that had caught his eye. He was simply looking around. Until Hiroto’s gaze came to a halt.
